It's sort of similar to how people respond to 'reference humor'. The feeling of 'getting it' when you understand a clever joke, and the feeling of 'getting it' when you just recognize something is being referenced are close enough to the same that they're indistingusiable for most people. So when character archtypes come up in a story, that feeling of 'I see what you did there', feels to the reader almost just like they would feel when they recognize something clever or interesting about a more complex and better written character. It's like an emotional shortcut. You can get around having to write sophistacted characters by just having them ping various genre tropes.
