Wasted? More like enjoyed. Ten years ago I was a hardcore WoW raider and those three years and almost 10k hours feel like a complete hole in my life. Same goes for other periods I was consumed by vidya entirely.
My time having anime/nip games, manga etc as a primary hobby has allowed me plenty of productive time in the other hand; you can easily juggle multiple hobbies with it. After all anime is not that taxing; it only is really heavy for the first year or two while you are marathoning old shows all the time to catch up to speed. After that it's what, a few hours a week for current season. Vidya is actually far more time consuming and is designed to always be so; anime you taper out and cruise lazily along hitting up whatever strikes your fancy without having to worry about keeping up some online rank or spend hundreds of hours grinding RPGs just to finish them.
There are people on this board who weren't even born yet when Evangelion aired.

As people have mentioned, the benefit of the medium is that it rarely creates the same time sink videogames (what everyone else is doing) do. How many haven't wasted their entire youth playing 10h WoW a day? How many have wasted their youth watching 10h anime a day? The latter is a negligible number. It's taxing watching anime for prolonged sessions. It's not like games where your brain is constantly rewarded and urged to go on. Generally an hour or two is preferrable for most people. And that would hardly be called addiction or detriment to one's health. I guess the actual detriment would be not only watching anime but also spending a lot of time talking about anime on the Internet. It's easier to be on the Internet. It barely requires any attention and since it's pseudo-social, it's less tiresome to our reward system. Another detriment would be acting like a sperglord and not being able to separate anime from reality. But that applies to all media.
Reading this thread, it seems like many didn't start to watch anime seriously until they were in their 20's. Doesn't surprise me since that's about the age where you've already experienced the best in games and movies.

I just never went to school, so I had to repeat a few classes. Then I disappeared for a year or two and needed to get a doctor's assessment to be allowed on the school grounds again. In the end the teachers just wanted me to successfully finish school, so they didn't report my missing days any more. I know for a fact that I've missed some 40% of all classes, but the final paper doesn't mention even one.
