I love Japanese. Why is this language so fucking fun? I was expecting some awful slog through thousands of words, but it's been nothing but non-stop fun for the last 6 months or so.

Isn't this strange? Wasn't this language supposed to be one of the hardest around? Then why is every aspect so simple compared to my native English?

Learning languages is fun.

>Isn't this strange? Wasn't this language supposed to be one of the hardest around? Then why is every aspect so simple compared to my native English?

For starters, English is ALSO one of the hardest around. In fact, English is arguably harder than Japanese, Japanese is only "one of the hardest" for us westerners while English is hard for everyone.

Second, spoken Japanese is actually fairly simple, it's the writing system that gets people.

That "slog" arises as months and years pass and you're still blown the fuck out by vocabulary in things you want to read (see: non shounen manga). If you're in your first six months then you haven't quite experienced "intermediate hell" as it's known (see >>133119196). Well, you may be one of those folks who do 100 words in anki, in that case you'll probably skip that entirely.

Also, as >>133135795 says, most of the difficulty in Japanese is actually kanji (inb4 inevitable "its just a time sink" comments), though some aspects like properly speaking keigo and names are real killers.

You're retarded.

If you start every morning with caffeine, IT IS ONLY MAKING YOU MORE TIRED.

It doesn't matter how little sleep you get or whatever other bullshit you have going on. Regular caffeine consumption gives you a "new normal" that's lower than what you'd be at without it, and leaves you 10x as tired until you feed your addiction.

A week without coffee and you'd wake up every morning with a slightly higher energy level than you usually get after you finish your regular coffee.

This is scientific fact.

>A week without coffee and you'd wake up every morning with a slightly higher energy level than you usually get after you finish your regular coffee.

The dependency on caffeine lasts roughly 1.5 months, not one week.

Caffeine does not affect your "energy levels", it affects your neurology.

Whether you /have/ it, is that simple. The extent is irrelevant to the argument at hand, because it's an absolutism about "is caffeine, as such, beneficial to sleep deprivation, as such", with no statements about magnitude.

What the heck are you even trying to say? You oversimplified sleep depriviation with incorrect statements such as "if you wake up to an alarm you're sleep deprived" which is not true.

Nope. Doubts it to be /dubious/. Completely different.

>Which is their problem.

Yes, but it's not /this/ problem.

>What the heck are you even trying to say?

You can't follow simple logic? Let me break it down for you:

1) We're talking about caffeine
2) We're not stating how much
3) We're talking about how this undefined amount of caffeine relates to sleep deprivation
4) You make an argument about the /amount/ of sleep deprivation
5) This is a fallacy of invalid context

>You oversimplified sleep depriviation with incorrect statements such as "if you wake up to an alarm you're sleep deprived" which is not true.

Except it is. Research shows that people who wake up to alarms every day, even if they go to bed for example 8 hrs before their alarm (a sensible amount of time), all show signs of minor to mild sleep deprivation over time.

Stop using that word. I'm not going to respond to this line of argument until you stop using the word "bad" to describe this view on caffeine.

>Yes it is.

Ten words or less. Go.

It is literally impossible for these two views to be held without there being an argument about differing amounts of sleep deprivation.

This sounds like a bullshit statistic.

I can't speak from personal experience, but going off of Steve Kauffman's accounts + my own experiences, production is a separate yet highly related skill. There are people who can produce far better than they can listen (these people are generally very bad at both, though). If you think about it, unless your listening skills are very good, you can probably think of a few words that you could say but wouldn't necessarily pick out in a conversation between two Japanese people.

Steve says that production is like this: You "activate" your passive vocabulary through sheer practice. It's tough as shit at first, but over the course of a few weeks of non-stop production, your passive knowledge begins to kick in, and it gets easier. Where input helps here is that it builds your passive vocabulary and gets you used to the rhythm of the language, thereby greatly increasing your potential and making you much better at production when you finally get the hang of it.
>>
>>133141351
yeah, mostly coffee
>>
>>133140891
If I don't get 7-8 hours of sleep I start falling asleep while watching anime or doing some equally passive activity. Even worse if it's right after eating
>>
>that feel when you're watching a variety show and see a celebrity you actually know for once
>that feel when you actually understand a reference because you've seen the drama they're referencing
Finally. I'm becoming Japanese.

Now all I have to do is watch a few thousand episodes of Doraemon.
>>
>>133141364
In other words:

You can't produce what you don't understand, but you can understand whatever you can (actually) produce.

Different people are better or worse at actually producing, but it's somewhat relative to what they can understand.

>>
>>133141220

It's more likely that you don't have a set sleep schedule.

If you wake up at 10 a.m. every single day, eventually, your body will start waking you up at 10 a.m. even without an alarm. Same thing with sleep. If you go to sleep at 2 a.m. every single day, eventually, your body will begin with get drowsy a little before 2 a.m.

You can also sleep too much. Personally, my body begins to fuck me over if I get more than nine hours of sleep.

Lastly, consider exercising. That'll boost your energy levels a bit.
>>
>>133141632
I feel like a lot of those gags wouldn't even work with TL notes, the joke is the sudden appearance of some heavy drama actor in a silly role.

Sorry you were stupid enough to major in a fucking language.

What's worse is that the culture element of your course will focus on stupid bullshit anyone could learn from Wikipedia in 5 minutes.

I took a college Japanese course for 3 days and left. The professor (a Jap) told us that we were going to completely ignore kanji and do like 5 hiragana per class and eventually 5 katakana per class. If your goal isn't to get a job that requires a degree in Japanese, and you just want to learn the language for the sake of knowing the language, then learning on your own is invariably going to be faster than the majority of college courses.

What do you guys use for reading manga? I have a kobo glo e-reader (which is fine for LNs ofc) and an old samsung tablet. It's quite heavy if you read for a while and I thought about getting something lighter. Recommendations?

Thought about a smaller tablet (~7-8 inch) or HD e-ink reader, anyone has some experience with those?

Buying the physical copies in Japanese is a pain in the ass in Europe and just costs too much for large quantities compared to buying a translated manga. Might be an option though for works I really enjoy. If you are from Europe, any recommended websites to order them? Experience ordering them directly from Japan yourself?

Yes, it is possible to handle your reading in a way that's not conductive towards learning.

And? You're going to have to kick that habit if you're looking to get good at Japanese, regardless of whether you use anki or not.

>If you use text hookers, this means that you automatically blindly rely on furigana and the dictionary telling you what every word means instead of recalling readings and piecing together sentences on your own.

Not true in the least.

>But you're prone to.

If you've formed such a habit, it's very possible to break it. It's called "don't look at the text parsing or hover over words until you've confirmed that you don't have sufficient knowledge to figure it out on your own".

You really should start reading as soon as you finish a grammar guide. Anki serves as a great auxiliary activity to reading, and reading makes anki easier. Many times, you'll find that you can just hit easy on an anki card because you've learned it from your reading, and that other cards containing kanji from that word will be no-effort.
>>
>>133151847
