I honestly felt nothing at all in this scene. The writing for Gon's decent into full edge lord was so fucking shoddy. Why would he feel so strongly for Kite? He literally met him for about half a day and all he knew was that he was a friend of his father. Kite wasn't his mentor, he wasn't even really his friend. They barely knew each other. The reason he was killed had nothing to do with Gon. Just idiotic reason to rage desu, not to mention out of character for the seemingly happy go lucky 'you can't break my will' Gon.
I thought Kurapikas rage mode fight against Uvo was a lot better.

Read the manga. The anime did not portray their relationship accurately.
Regardless, you've missed the point. It was less about his relationship with Kite and more about him blaming himself. His rage was fueled by a combination of
>crushing guilt
>feeling weak and helpless
>wanting to punish himself
>his optimism and determination failing him (the 'happy go lucky' and 'you can't break my will' traits you mentioned yourself)
>seeing his enemy heal someone and show their 'human' side (something he's been shown to hate back in Yorkshin) when he wants to be able to blame them instead
None of these are out of character, it's just a situation in which his typical battle shounen mc characteristics are taken to the extreme.

And while it's been a long fucking time since I read HxH, I don't remember Gon going full rage mode. I recall it being a lot more focused and controlled.
