If you weren't there, you can't understand what anime fandom was like 15 years ago.
Fansubs were all on VHS tapes, were both difficult and expensive to get, ran months or years behind first release, and many series didn't have translations at all. Official releases were similarly slow and expensive with an even smaller selection, but they at least had wide distribution so they formed the common ground for fandom.
Ranma was one of the most easily found of the official releases. You could usually find somewhere in town to rent some tapes from, though they wouldn't have the full series. Heck, I don't think the full series had finished it's official release yet. The Ranma manga was also getting an official release, though very slowly, making it one of the few series that was available in English.
So all the fans know Ranma. They also don't have the full series, either anime or manga, so they know it's unfinished. And they want more. So what do they do? They start writing more. The Fan Fiction Mailing List was just flooded with Ranma fanfic. It was like the common trade language for the emerging anime fandom to trade ideas and stories in, a base material they twisted into new genres.
Five years later it was an entirely different landscape. Digital anime fansubs were bringing over new series in decent quality with only a week or two delay. Manga scanalation was a thing that was picking up steam. There wasn't such a desperate hunger for new material driving people to cannibalize what little they had into a vast sea of headcannon and fanfic.
It was entirely a product of a brief window of specific circumstances.

Akane is hated for mostly the last half of the manga which everyone remembers a lot more then the first half. In the first half Akane overall much nicer to Ranma while Ranma was generally a huge fucking prick. Then somewhere along the lines their rolls were reversed.
The reason why Akane's bitchiness is hated more then Ranma's dickey though is because Akane has a whole family to back her up including Ranma's family and characters like Ryoga and Kuno, even when she's wrong. And of course the double standard shit.
That being said, Akane isn't a cunt per say, she's just a cunt to Ranma and while I my think Ranma would be better off with Shampoo (had they met under different circumstances) I still like Akane as a character and she blows the competition away when she's at her best (too bad it's few and far between).
I wish Akane had kept the long hair. Then she could have actually given Shampoo a run for her money in the looks department.

Akane in season 1 is fine. I'd even venture to say she's a good character. And I even grew to find her cute.
The problem is, after her hair is cut, she becomes not only a bitch, bu a generic bitch. And the story as a whole just becomes filler. The manga was bad enough. But the anime made it even worse, basically becoming 'The Happosai Show: Featuring Ranma and co'.
Akane isn't really the problem. The problem is Rumiko Takahashi never doing anything with Akane except at the very beginning and very end. Which is ironic because she originally made Ranma to try and redo the story of Urusei Yatsura, where she wanted Shinobu to be the focus. But Ranma turned out to be so bad, Shinobu in UY still came out as a better character even when she didn't win.

Seeing people call Akane evil is pretty funny since all the girls in this series act like insane bitches. E.g. Ukyo shows up at Ranma's wedding and starts throwing bombs around. Shampoo was on a quest to murder someone because she was defeated in a duel. (Also Ryoga in the fishing pole story decided that murdering Ranma and informing Akane of that fact to be the most effective way to win her heart.)

/a/ is actually able to watch the anime and read the manga they bicker about.
The state of the Ranma fandom was *awful* in that there was very little access to the anime, Viz hadn't finished publishing the manga in the U.S.
A a lot of fans had to go off of was the first few episodes, smattering of other random episodes they could find, and the first movie (The first movie alone is responsible for a *ton* of fanfic tropes.)
Left with nothing to do but stew, they created fanfics. And then fanfics inspired by *those* fanfics. Characters became warped as fanfiction drifted. Popular fanfics ended up being more influential then Takahashi's work.
I will never forgive that jackass Zen for writing The Bitter End, an awful fanfic made to portray his waifu Ukyo as perfect. It then created a festering wound in the entire fandom by warping a lot of people's perspectives on Akane to that of a violent psychopath.
