I'm finding it kind of amazing how badly this show is doing for all the usual ad hype Aniplex put into it's Saturday shows yet again. Looks like it's time to pull out the old extras machine, event tickets and whatever tie-ins they can up with to salvage a show yet again, but considering it already has a whole volume purchase bonus their only real options seem to be an event ticket or some sort of tie-in with the game Bandai Namco is making like what IBO is doing with Extreme Vs.

God Eater Vol 1 is packaged in with the PS4 edition of God Eater Resurrection and then the subsequent volumes are getting a G4U style set of releases called God Eater Off Shot each one featuring a character like...oh I don't know, Alisa. Basically the numbers are going to be shit for the BD only versions but you're going to be looking toward the PS4 version of God Eater Resurrection that comes out a few days later to see. I love it and think it's one of the best mecha series to come out of the 00s.
It started back in 2004 so the original series has animation that's not stellar and looks a bit dated. Every subsequent OVA, Movie and the new series have had major jumps in quality.
It's a very consistent show. In that it doesn't really dip in quality but the first half of the first season is a bit hard for first time watchers (but is better on a rewatch because you'll know the characters at that point and notice little eccentricities that fit what you learned after watching the entire original)
To watch it though you have to 1.)Be able to handle Hirai character design. 2.) Be able to handle animation on a budget for the first series
3.)Be able to handle the most we're totally gay but we're totally not gay relationship between two male characters that makes most other attempts at that look straight
4.)Be able to connect dots and pay attention
Barriers to entry are high, but as a mecha fan it's rewarded me as a viewer far more than almost any mecha anime I've watched in ages.

There are also novel adaptations of the early part of Dead Agressor that fleshes out some stuff they couldn't fit into the show, a manga that is also doing that currently running but not translated, and Audio Drams that also flesh out some content that couldn't make the cut in the original series.
Watch in release date order unless you're literally unable to make it through the first 13 or so episodes of the series, in which case give the Ova a viewing and decide if you want to continue because the Ova is what the overall quality of the series becomes past that first hurdle, but you'll appreciate it more watching it after the first series.

Look, I'm not saying it should be done, but the show does have plenty of exposition.
For example Makabe and Narain having their meeting in Ep. 2, Soushi's expository dialog in Ep. 1.
It guts a lot of characterization sure, but it is possible to get through the show. You miss out, but it probably comes off as a pretty interesting experience considering the structure. It would likely feel like some other military anime.
Like Sein and Nicht would be failed prototypes that get hyped up for several episodes, but you eventually learn through Fumihiko in Ep. 8 and Hester in Ep 13 that they were used before.
Sure, the enjoyment is also gutted because the hype isn't there, but it is entirely possible.
I'm glad I saw DA and H&E first, but I always like to consider a work independently of its supporting material, and Fafner still stands up.
That's one of the reasons I like it so much.

It'd a daytime show which are rarely best sellers these days. Build Fighters got a box set release cause they figured it wouldn't sell well individually, I'm not sure why they didn't do the same for IBO.
