It's just like why there are religious symbols in NGE. Anno has said they just used it because it looks cool. Japan doesn't have the same relationship with Christianity that we do here in the west. To them it's more esoteric and the average Jap probably doesn't know too much about it.

Because the church is essentially more powerful than nation, simply because it controls its followers psychologically (through beliefs that if you step out of line, you go to hell) rather than physical power like a state has (you step out of line, you go to jail or are killed by our forces),
Having an assassination unit would be the perfect way to silence critics of the church that could seriously damage its reputation.

Folks stuck on our church were raised Roman Catholic, UCC, fundamentalist evangelical, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Mormon, Unitarian, Jewish, atheist, agnostic, and the fastest-growing religious demographic in America, "none." We are Black, Latino, Asian, multiracial, and (mostly, but we're working on it) Anglo. And this is why translating the Bible to peasant languages was a mistake.
Burn all Protestants.
>>
>>132671801
Current western society has less peasants than Ancient Greece did when the bible was written. If anything, it was translated from a peasant language to a language of computer techies.
>>
>>132671859
Except it was not, only patrician could read let alone write.

>>
>>132672351
>pagan. Its roots have nothing to do with religion, instead its original meaning was simply something stuck in the ground as a landmark.
Over time it was extended to refer not just to the landmark itself, but the area around it, and then finally the people living there. Eventually it came to mean any citizen of a town or city. When Christianity came along with the notion that its followers were metaphorical soldiers of God, to be a mere citizen meant you were outside the faith — a heathen — where the meaning of the word has finally settled today.
>>
>>132672351
>not worshipping the gods of your ancestors
>worshipping Yahweh instead, which is just another version of the god of Babylon
There's a reason western civilization flourished in the arts and sciences under the old Greek and Roman religions and began stagnating once Christianity was instated.

Christianity is a tool that destroys and consumes native belief systems and replaces them with a sanitized, dumbed down form of Judaism meant for non-Jews.
>>
>>132672416
the Roman Pontiff, when he speaks ex cathedra — that is, when in the exercise of his office as pastor and teacher of all Christians he defines, by virtue of his supreme Apostolic authority, a doctrine of faith or morals to be held by the whole Church — is, by reason of the Divine assistance promised to him in blessed Peter, possessed of that infallibility with which the Divine Redeemer wished His Church to be endowed in defining doctrines of faith and morals; and consequently that such definitions of the Roman Pontiff are irreformable of their own nature (ex sese) and not by reason of the Church's consent"

And they were pagan for at least twice that amount of time before that. Yahweh is what Marduk became when the Babylonians just said fuck it and got rid of the rest of their pantheon and gave those gods' qualities to him. And yes, human progress did begin stagnating, because the church was too busy executing anyone who dared think outside the limits of the Bible as a heretic. Why do you think the Renaissance period was such a huge step forward? Because Europeans dared to look back at pagan Greece and Rome and look at those ideas again.

Carino struck Peter's head with an axe and then attacked Domenico. Peter rose to his knees, and recited the first article of the Symbol of the Apostles (the Apostle's Creed). Offering his blood as a sacrifice to God, according to legend, he dipped his fingers in it and wrote on the ground: "Credo in Unum Deum", the first words of the Nicene Creed. The blow that killed him cut off the top of his head, but the testimony given at the inquest into his death confirms that he began reciting the Creed when he was attacked.

Catholic Missionaries and imperial emissaries of Catholic nations like Portugal were involved with some shenanigans back during the Sengoku era.

And you all know how obsessed Japan is with the Sengoku era, so top that off with the Vatican's enormous influence over the history of Europe, from the Crusades to the Borgias, even to the point where the U.S. was concerned about electing the Catholic JFK in the late 50s/early 60s, you can see why they've got the sinister/exotic badass portrayal down in Chinese comics.

The Dutch convinced the Japanese that if they allow Christianity to flourish in Japan, Spain would use that as an excuse to attack and conquer them. So the Japs started cracking down on Christians, which eventually caused the Christians to rebel. The rebellion was suppressed, and Japs decided that dealing with foreigners was too much effort so they're just going to close the borders.

Japan could have been a Westernized, Christian state and started its colonial empire in the 16th century instead of the 19th century.

The Japanese believed the Church would bring an invasion by Spain or Portugal, which is why they attempted to eradicate Christianity under Hideyoshi and Ieyasu. So believing the Church was powerful enough to encourage a full on invasion by a foreign power mush have been in part at least a reason why they see the Catholics as a highly powerful entity.

Why would Japan being Christian mean no anime? If "Catholic" France can produce cartoons, so can Catholic Japan. It's not like traditional Jap values aren't at odds with the anime industry anyways.

If anything, we'd have more anime now. West has started producing cartoons in like 1900s, and closer ties to Japan would mean Japan would start doing them sooner too.

They would have a very diffeent aesthetic though. Anime is heavilly influenced by the art of the pre-Meiji period and eastern cultural influences. Christianity would most likely have absorbed and supplanted those, giving it a very different look. That's the trouble with might-has-beens, one small change can often wrought huge changes further down the line. It's why I love counterfactual History as it offers a window to examine and critique History as it is today.
>>
>>132682606
Oh certainly anon. The Catholic France is producing stuff like pics related in their cartoons.
Also France is hardly Catholic. It's a secular country for a long time.

The reason why Anime is different from the western cartoons is because Japan is different from the western countries. If it was westernized in 16th century like anon suggested, it would be the same as the US.
