IIMHO it lacks raw, emotional drama. The characters are too nice and effective so they hardly ever screw up or display their "ugly" side. Suite has Melody/Rhythm quarrel and bitchiness of Seiren and Ako, Fresh has Love/Setsuna enmity/betrayal and heartcatch has every fucking cast. Even smile cure has their despair faces. I still haven't found the moment that princess cure or even side character (Yui etc) in significant emotion breakdown yet.

Haruka has had insecurities from time to time about whether she can accomplish her dream. Minami had moments of weakness when she tried and failed to defeat the ghost zetsuborg on her own, when Tina got hurt trying to defend her, and now she's got some doubts over her dream. Towa's entire arc after joining the team was about coming to terms with her actions as Twilight, and in Kirara's episode with her mother things got a bit ugly between them.

No, not really. I'm not sure it really needs to be saved, unless you really need to see it become an incredibly long legacy series like KBM/SS. Maybe it needs a break and revival, maybe it needs a regroup so that every single season is about friendship at its core so that it becomes The dependable series for that. Because all kidding aside, I'm not sure a one- or two-year gimmick will save the series, other than letting it drag on for another couple of years past that despite sub-par standards.
Or maybe that should be the model, one great year every 3-4. I dunno.

God damn that was a good episode I missed the livewatch for. Minimizing the fight time and focusing on the episode's plot was awesome and long-coming, as was having it on two side characters while still developing Haruka and Kanata. While the entire thing was a great expression of Haruka's determination, the way she turned everyone's expectations on their head and rejected Kanata joining the play blew me away. I love Haruka so much, especially because she has the guts and ability to pull off what she preaches. Oh yeah, and that fucking awesome floral burst in the battle, she ain't got time for their shit.
