The flag will always look the same, but can you read fancy fonts like this or handwriting without really knowing how the kanji are written?
I'd say learning to write greatly helps you with stuff like that, the only real downside is that you have to learn it

Meh
If you don't know over 2000 kanji you're still pretty early in. If you know over 2000 and are still actively learning Japanese you're probably still in the vocabulary acquisition phrase known as intermediate. But that's about all you can judge. An advanced student will know just as many kanji as a well read intermediate.

>studied 309 cards in 10 minutes
Alright lads this is my best speed ever in anki. 300 in 10 minutes. I remember when I thought 100 in 10 minutes was impossible. So this is the power of anki.
>>132163881
Hmm, the main thing I would say though is that most methods recommended here end "strongly" - RTK3 ends with 3,000 some kanji under your belt which is hanpanai, Core2k ends really quickly AND gives you enough to start a mined deck (and subsequently a mined deck is never ending), etc etc but WaniKani ends with 2,000 kanji which isn't enough and 6,000 vocab which isn't enough, you need to go from WaniKani straight into anki after finishing, and at that point why not just go anki from the beginning? Not to mention anki is free. If he is reliant on wanikani's stuff to keep him motivated then he's gonna have a really rough time when he starts anki. Whereas if he just started with core + rtk (or whatever) in anki he'd never have to completely switch environments.

Though this is all moot if he's actually doing both wanikani and anki, I don't know.

I'm about 1300 cards into Core6k now and I'm starting to notice that some of the translations for the cards are pretty bad. Some examples:
>選手
Core: representative athlete
Jisho: player (in game); team member
What the fuck is a "representative athlete"? I mean, I know what the two individual words mean, but I've never seen or heard this term in my life.

>売り切れ
Core: sellout, sold out
Jisho: sold-out
"Sellout" is pretty much never used as anything but an insult. Nobody says "the venue is a sellout", they say "the venue is sold-out".

>写る
Core: be taken, be seen through
Jisho: to be photographed; to be projected

These are just a few I got today, but I've come across others in the past. Where do these bad translations come from?

It is kinda long with the individual routes being short and unlocking as the story progresses. The suffering and depression was from Kamimaho. Aokana wasn't hard but it was kind of long, and I'm a completionist so I had to finish every route. I also thought it was kind of average and it bored me at times which made it take even more time to read. And I disliked the protagonist. I was pretty much in the middle of reading it when Kamimaho came out and I ditched Aokana for it.

>easy to remember because you include it in a fucking mnemonic that also denotes the radical components of the kanji
>never have to dissect words to try and remember which reading was for which kanji
>only have to memorise the exceptions that don't fall under the most common reading
Learning kanji through vocab is pretty much one of the stupidest things you can do, and quickly lends itself to mixing up similar kanji.

But Anon, kanji that use more than one onyomi are very very exceptionally rare. 'Which reading a word uses' is in practice not even a problem.

Daily reminder to use mnemonics to remember kanji composition, onyomi and meaning.

You'll remember it better, won't get similar looking kanji confused and be able to guess the meaning (and reading) of most jukugo without even trying.

Learning a dozen kanji and then inferring the meaning of dozens of jukugo is far more efficient and an objectively better way of learning than memorizing dozens of jukugo and inferring the kanji reading/meaning.

I'm really glad, all the kanji in core are stuff I see all the time while reading so mining the stuff I specifically don't know really helps. If it helps, I switched at the 2200 point.

The only big big warning I have is that if you add a kanji you don't know, go to jisho and at least 2-3 "common" words with that kanji, preferably using like *浦 and 浦* to get it into different positions. Otherwise you'll memorize it in that one word then struggle to remember it in other contexts

Come on anon, if you know what you're saying you should be able to define "know".

You say you need to be able to write a kanji to know a kanji. Therefore, "being able to write" must be in the definition of "know", right? There's a hint, work off that.

To test out my Japanese I decided to play some old Dragon Quest games since they're not too complex. Not too many problems so far but I di have a question about something I just saw.

In Rupugana there's a girl who offers to give you a puff puff and if you say no she says:

「オカマのどこが わるいのよ! いじわる……。」

I'm confused about the first sentence. オカマ means male homosexual, so is she accusing the player of being gay because he doesn't want a puff-puff? Not 100% sure what どこ is here either. I think she might be saying "It's such a shame you're gay! How unkind..." or something like that.

If you're saying that learning to write isn't that big of a burden to your other studies, then logically speaking, you also have to admit that he can easily learn to write after he's read millions of sentences and amassed a huge vocabulary.

Before you get argumentative, please know that I strongly encourage writing, because it definitely helps with retention (there are countless backing this claim up, and they're not only related to language-learning either). Child japanese learn their language before they learn how to write. It takes them the entirety of compulsory education to be able to write without issue. However, their language is indivisible from the way it's written.

It's impossible for us to have the natural method of knowing the grammar and many words before we begin to study kanji, because we are not blessed with many innocent years to naturally learn the spoken language.

It's impossible for us to learn writing naturally, because it's simply not something that we did while evolving. There are illiterate normal people. There are no unspoken normal people.

There is no right answer to this problem. The only thing you can know that you mustn't do is conflate the current options as being all that is available.

If enough people try hard enough, for long enough, and don't blindly snuff out other memes, then effective learning methods will always shine through. We can only write because we're taught it, and writing only works because it happens to be good for us, and it only happens to be good for us because we've tried for generations and generations to make it better and better. Learning methods are the same thing. They're DNA of the educated soul.

I feel like these kinds of posts are made by really inexperienced people
It only takes like 6-12 months of anki and regular reading to get pretty good at Japanese, and by month 16-24 you'll be blowing through SOL manga and moege (or LNs aimed at 13 year olds such as DxD or Oreimo). At that point there is really no way you can feel despair about the language.

You say the effective language learning methods will always shine through. Well, they already have. Read a lot. Listen a lot. Basically, PRACTICE. That's it, that's all it takes to learn a language. The only reason people fail on like reddit is because they spend too little time practicing the language and too much time not practicing.

The biggest problem in this whole mess the huge number of people who think "speaking from day 1" is effective, and the huge number of glasses who spread that incorrect information.

In short just read a lot and listen a lot and there is literally nothing to worry about. Within the end of your second year you'll be fucking awesome at Japanese.
