Why is everything about Seraph of the End so bland? It's like the most generic anime I ever saw. Who the hell thought it's a good idea to make a series so goddamn generic in every way?

All of the characters, except for Shinoa, are very similar to charaters from other shows. You have the pussy, good natured friend character, the generic tough guy rival, homolust, etc. The protagonist et al have special, super cool weapons like in half of every shonen ever.

I'm not the same person who was originally posting. That was my first post in the thread. With that said, i've seen the opinion parroted many times and I have to agree.
If I had to put my finger on the key similarities though it would be the "haven in post-apoc" setting, the face that the Yuu and Eren are nearly identical, and the similarities between Yuu/Guren relationship and the Eren/Levi relationship. Both of these are quite heavy focuses of the works so they feel remarkably similar. All in all, I actually think SnK did it better before it went to shit.

Its really not difficult. In addition to the three I just mentioned, both ended up going with the: "the humans in [haven] are even worse than the monsters!" cliche.
Both pull the: "We have to use the enemy's evil power against them!" schtick. Both have the protag having a secret super important backstory thats thinly hinted at despite the ostensibly ultra-generic (not meta generic but in-setting-generic) backstory. (Yuu=Seraph Eren = Prince; or something? I dunno I dropped it.)
At the end of the day i'd call it about 75%SNK + 25% Ao no Exorcist.
