But archers can be effective a close range too, archer can keep lancer at bay with his two swords, Legolas had swords too and Hawkeye stabbed people at close range.
Bow is better because is safer and more strategic, but a good archer can get shit done at close range, while a lancer or saber can't do shit a long range.
