Christmas cake means losing.
>>
But she wins in the end anon.
>>
That movie was fucking stupid and the MC was a dumb beta for settling with a loose-cunt used goods whore who will be all wrinkled up in 10 years.
The only thing that the movie had going for it was a nice art style and feet.

The movie is like 25 minutes long, so having a good art style and good feet are enough to carry it.

It did for me. When the movie ended, I felt conflicted. I knew I hated the plot, and wasn't in love with the characters, but I enjoyed it anyway just because of the art and feet.

Its the type of movie that I'd recommend to a friend with the caveat: don't go in it for the story.

His calling it realism just strengthens the argument that he's pessimistic though.

Better in every aspect.
Except for some animation stuff. Goddamn Garden of Words was pretty.
>>
>>124746464
>>124746521

I also think Garden of Words was better in animation, though 5 Centimeters per second is still beautiful.

Other than that, though, I enjoyed the stories of 5 centimeters per second more. The characters and themes left a better impression on me. This is largely a personal argument, but its why I prefer 5 cm.

I completely disagree.
5cm made me feel absolutely nothing. Especially the second chapter was very mediocre. Sure it's pretty but the actual characters didn't do it for me. I don't dislike the idea of the "story" but it just didn't have any kind of effect on me.

Garden of Words on the other hand felt less realistic in a way but it was straight forward. Very simple motivations but well drawn out.

I'd like to think of it as a straight line without any hiccups. 5cm was too random at times. It's strange because I usually do not have a problem with that.
>>
>>124746641
I think that 5 cm/sec has a lot more themes people can relate to.
Not a lot of people can relate to falling in love with an older woman while you both ditch school
I think a lot more can relate to losing your childhood love due to distance.
I know I could.

They both were failures. That's what made them a compatible couple.
>>
>>124747125
How is she lusting? Did you understand the whole point of the movie?
>>
>>124746879
That's part of why I liked 5 cm, though. When I first watched it, the first two stories were great, but the last one didn't do anything for me. It wasn't until I watched it much later that it connected with me. I appreciate a movie that you can go back to and get something new out of it.

I actually don't think the execution of multiple stories in one movie was perfect, but I think that it worked well enough that it was an improvement for what they were going for.

>>124746909
I agree. Its what makes it hard for me to judge GoW. I think 5 cm did a great job at exploring these themes in an unconventional way, and its partly evidenced by how it resonated with me.

I can't tell how well GoW explored the themes that it was trying to capture, because I don't have any experience to compare it to. Even so, I thought that it was a little too straight forward to do it properly, though that's probably due to how short it was.

Garden of Words was Shinkai's most well rounded movie to me despite being so short and being his least cathartic. The animation was great, the characters were solid, it had subtle themes supported symbolically, and it has music by Kashiwa Daisuke. Really, I can't say anything bad about it personally other than it lacked the same impactful ending as his other works have. But it made me like feet so that's got to count for something.
>>
>>124747402
But that's fucking wrong, because he fell in love with the older version again and THAT allowed him to change everything. The cake won.

Disregarding animation (Which shouldn't be disregarded since it's an animated movie). I still like Garden of Words better. Even though I love them both.
>>
>>124747901
They're both very high up on my "fuckin' liked it" list. It really boils down to a "to each their own" sorta thing.
>>
>>124747821

No it's not. Threads about his movies always devolve into insufferable shitposting. I don't expect /a/ to like or even give any animated romantic story a chance unless it has an outlandish quirk or is wish fulfillment bullshit.
>>
>>124747975
I do agree there. Shinkai really knows how to make a good subtle story. I can't really remember anything he has done that I genuinely dislike.
>>
>>124748036
You'd be surprised. TLS was well received and had a lot of threads when it first came out.

I agree with the anons sayint that Garden of Words is Shinkai's best movie.

It wasn't as depressing as his other ones, but at the same time, it felt much less emotionally manipulative.

I never felt like I should be caring for the characters, but I still wanted to see it all unfold.

I also loved how everything, from the art direction to the soundtrack had a purpose. It felt very well rounded.
