I haven't watched Shigurui but I can safely assume that the manga is a lot more visually pleasing, the narrative story telling is also god tier in the manga. Yuru Yuri is consistently comfy and funny in the manga, I like the anime but I think the manga is better, it's all up to personal preference though.

Why Doujouji, I liked Kataku best personally but Nemuri-hime is also good, both had nice punchlines. I'd still pick Fusha no Sha, Tabi and maybe Kenju Giga over Doujouji. I liked Doujouji of course but it didn't strike me as particularly special, maybe I'm missing something?

Not him though.

>Why do you like the Madoka movie?
I feel like it's severly underrated. The movie's cinematography combined with Yuki Kajiura's soundtrack and symbolism that doesn't suffocate you, along with the balé themes (including Homura's balé outfit) makes it into one of my favorite anime experiences.

It's gotten a lot of flack due to it's controversial ending and some people thinking it's just milking the franchise, I however think it's the perfect ending to a great series.

It's almost like a theatric play.

Doing my best to not sound pretentious here.
>>
>>124675397
I at least thought Doujouji was darker/more complicated than Nemuri-hime, it stood out more to me when watching Kihachiro Kawamoto. Maybe I just like traditional Japanese stories more.

>>124675489
When I watched it, I just thought it shouldn't exist, even though I thought the art was technically beautiful.
Honestly, it didn't add anything to the Madoka series, if anything it detracted from the experience.
I don't give a shit about future renditions.
>>
>>124675839
Different strokes and everything, I view anime the same way I view any other visual medium and because of that standpoint I'm able to appreciate the movie for what it is.

I thought I was just biased at first since I saw it at a screening in Japan but after a rewatch I realized that it had become one of my favorite anime movies.
>>
>>124675839
Not them, but I just viewed Rebellion as fanservice of sorts, answering questions that fans had that weren't of any real importance but were nice to know and look at. The concept of nightmares was creepy in comparison to what we knew of the series, the Homura Mami fight was great, and the twist setting up future sequels was in line with how I interpreted Homura's character from the series.

The series certainly didn't need any sequels, but we really didn't get to see a lot of the characters and the premise was good enough that I would like to see more of it done well.
>>
>>124673303
>What do you think about current anime?
eh its alright.
>>
>>124676156
>>124676348
I guess my problem with Rebellion was the that I thought every animation choice was fucking retarded, mostly the stupid dancing sequence.
Before you get mad at me, I want to state that obviously Madoka is better than most anime and I really loved the original television series. When my friend and I watched the Rebellion, we both thought it was a waste of budget and that it should have just ended with the original. The action scene at the end was one of my main issues.

I liked the setting of Doujouji better, but it just felt dull for a Kawamoto work, like there was something missing. I thought it needed narration at first, but Tabi feels complete enough without it so I'm not sure.
>>
>>124679137
Not that guy but yeah I personally don't like directors obsessed with dark subjects. I don't think its very healthy. They can be in films, sure, but the entire basis? I don't groove with that. Just tons of rape and violence and torture...at a certain point you're not trying to enrichen the lives of the audience, you're just trying to depress them.

Fincher is also a total control freak who demands every shot be perfect. He threw Edward Norton down that flight of stairs 13 times and then used the first take. Fincher also filmed the opening scene of The Social Network 99 times to get the tension just right.

Would you guys use a website that let you crop and manually center the images you placed in a 3x3, as well as add text labels on top of of each image?

Would you still use the site if it let you link multiple 3x3s to an account and then rate other people/get rated? As well as get suggestions for new content you might like or people you might want to chat with/play vidya with/etc.?

I believe you're overestimating the amount of anime you've seen as well, as when you say "350 shows" you're actually including more than just shows. Speaking of actual shows of any substantial length and not including movies, OVAs, and specials that aren't even two hours long, you're looking more at 250 than 350.

I get your point, and I do think there are plenty of high power level people whose tastes are shit, but the guy who has seen 180 very good anime isn't going to have as much perspective as the person who's seen five hundred shows of more varied quality. Obviously, if the five hundred are all of a specific kind (either all one genre or all from the last four years or whatever), that's different, but I do think broad experience trumps "refined" limited exposure, even if the broader person hasn't seen as many 'classics' as the aesthete.

I don't even know what would constitute an anime patrician besides liking a bunch of extremely rare and obscure experimental animation, overlooked series from the 70s, and so on.

The bar for good anime is set so fucking low. There's so much god damn awful shit out there.
>>
>>124688685
But I have to finish my physics homework
>>
>>124688757
You say this as if the bar for everything wasn't set low.

Japanese animation just happens to be smaller in comparison to film, music or literature.
>>
>>124688757
You just have to watch a bunch of decent to good old and more obscure shows and lie to yourself and others for a while that those shows are your favorites and eventually your taste will change and you'll be a true patrician.
>>
>>124688815
>the only people who like anime are the ones who like otakushit

>>124688836

It is also aimed at a culturally illiterate, young population.

It is too hard to choose an overall 3x3, so I'll just give you my film 3x3. Like I said, it is really conservative

Millennium Actress
Perfect Blue
Spirited Away
GITS 1
End of Evangelion
Laputa
Whisper of the Heart
Ninja Scroll
Mind Game

>>124687826
King and the mockingbird is the film that inspired takahata to work in animation.

Its a 3x3 thread not a rec thread. If you'd watched the shows you'd know what they were. The point is to post your shit taste and then tell everyone else while theres is worse.

I'm just getting older (24), and I have different expectations. I have been crushing through Kurosawa, Kobayashi, Mizoguchi, Ozu, Naruse, Kitano, and a handful of other canonical Japanese directors over the past year. Before that, I was on a huge 2000s Korean binge.

Film is just a lot more satisfying for me than anime, for the most part. It doesn't hurt that there are probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 to 750~ or so good to masterpiece Japanese films made. Anime is obviously a subsection of this, and much smaller, but I am often disappointed and afraid to waste too much time.

For instance, no horror anime can possibly compare to Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure. Very few anime can touch the tragedy of Sansho the Bailiff or capture the sublime like Kitano often can.

Anime just does things differently, and I'm not as interested in those things as I used to be. It doesn't help that animators and art directors often overlook cinematography, blocking, and that camera movement is almost inherently limited by the tiny budgets they're forced to work with.
>>
>>124689239
>while
*why
>>
What if I've only seen 5 anime?
>>
>>124689299
The sense I get is that most anime fans are between 14 and 20. The statistics probably support that, too. The average age here is probably around 20 or so, maybe less.

>>124689351
None taken. I have a fair amount of experience with the medium, but not a ton. It just isn't my main hobby. For the most part, people who immerse themselves in anime and only anime tend to have no context for what is actually good. You might be the exception, but that's the general idea I get. Like I said, I have very conservative tastes. My knowledge of 60s and 70s anime is extremely lacking, and I'm out of touch with most stuff produced in the digital era.
>>
>>124689099
That 3x3 says a lot. Explains a lot. Makes me laugh a lot.

Japan is all around one of the best countries in terms of creating art. This isn't even a weeaboo thing.

>>124689581

Narrowing down 9 is even harder, even if I were to just list Japanese films. I'm not that decisive.

I won't spoon feed you too hard, but check out the obscure and not so obscure stuff from the following directors (in very rough chronological order that may be out of order as I forget some directors later on):

1. Ozu
2. Mizoguchi
3. Akira Kurosawa
4. Naruse
5. Kinoshita
6. Kon Ichikawa
7. Kobayashi
8. Masumura
9. Oshima
10. Imamura
11. Shinoda
12. Suzuki
13. Wakamatsu
14. Fukasaku
15. Terayama
16. Morita
17. Yoshige Yoshida
18. Takeshi Kitano
19. Kiyoshi Kurosawa
20. Sion Sono
21. Naomi Kawase
22. Koreeda
23. Masayuki Suo
24. Yoji Yamada
25. Nakashima
26. Miike

So yeah, I left a lot of New Wave directors out, more popular directors, and the masters of tomorrow, but this is a solid list.

>>
>>124690290
Half of those are from the OP or ED and the other half are notable moments from the first episode.
>>
>>124690160
Okay, I'm feeling a bit generous. My favorite film from each director:

1. Floating Weeds
2. Sansho the Bailiff
3. Seven Samurai
4. Floating Clouds
5. Twenty-four Eyes
6. Fires on the Plain
7. Harakiri
8. Giants and Toys
9. In the Realm of the Senses
10. Vengeance Is Mine
11. Assassination
12. Tokyo Drifter (that theme though)
13. United Red Army
14. Graveyard of Honor
15. Grass Labyrinth
16. The Family Game
17. The Human Promise
18. Sonatine
19. Cure
20. Love Exposure
21. Suzaku
22. Maborosi
23. Shall We Dance?
24. Twilight Samurai
25. Confessions
26. Gozu

Good luck my friend.
>>
>>124690304

Don't you see that the "story" is secondary to the "experience". Go watch Nickelodeon for "stories". LotGH is something more than that. It's an entire living, breathing world. And it poetically mirrors the horrors in our world.

The anime writes the story on centuries of history. Conquest, technology, expansion, death... It's all there.

LotGH's canvas is far too large for small men to behold, I suppose.

My words are failing to sway you? We're in disagreement over art... Which is roughly analogous to dancing about architecture.

LotGH is an aesthetic experience. I can't tap into your nervous system and make you see what I see, but I can try to explain the soaring heights LotGH sent the show going public to.

Citing sources is a pedantic exercise. And besides, this is a forum for those to kick back and appreciate great art: a bit like a gentleman's club in centuries past. Here we chomp our cigars and wax poetic about the great works and the unanswerable questions.

I must say that you've (the non-believers) made a pariah of yourself at this club. What is instantly evident to us (the mastery of Tanaka's LotGH) isn't something you grasp. It's an exercise on futility to educate on the whys and wherefores of cinema. Suffice it to say you have proven yourself a dunce among gentlemen. I consider my point carried and LotGH again redeemed.

That may sound like a hominem as populum, but so is telling a schizophrenic man he isn't really seeing ghosts. When the entire community of learned anime connoisseurs clearly sees a work of genius, it's an act of insane vanity to attack it.

LotGH is simply beyond you, those in disagreement. I wish I could help you, but I fear there's no fixing stupid.

Dancing atop this fathomless ocean of meaning is Tanaka's story. It revels in all that lies beneath, but only suggests... Only hints. He leaves it to you to draw the myriad connections he's put in the anime.

But this requires, you see, some understanding of history, science, imperialism, philosophy, theology, astronomy, and anthropology.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is simply too grand a creation for some to come to terms with. Maybe one day you'll grow up enough to "get" it. I've seen it about 15 times and I'm still learning.

LotGH grounds its storytelling in solid plotting instead of messianic symbolism: which is actually harder to pull off and requires more craftsmanship but doesn't impress the pretentious teenagers who think Eva is Art.

'Democracy vs autocracy. Legitimacy of government. Nature of nations. Why fight for the fatherland when you can fight out of foppery and whim?' LotGH begs these questions, among others. He expressed a refreshing taste of philosophy that delved into epistemology and ontology, along with a thirst for the truth which I related with to the nth degree.

There's pretty much unanimous consensus among scholars that Legend of the Galactic Heroes is an eastern masterpiece... One of the very few that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Citizen Kane and Lawrence of Arabia.

>random background shot from the OP
Fantastic Children is obvious, Zettai Shounen's takes up 6 seconds of the OP, and Mouryou no Hako and Nadja both pretty much have those visuals for most of the ED, they're not exactly obscure and random.
>>
>>124690426
I haven't seen any of them except Mouryou no Hako, but I could recognize 4-5 more if you were kind enough to post something like the key visual or an actually characteristic shot.
