Let's have a manga thread, /a/.

What are you reading? What are you buying? Can this abominable port strike be over yet so that we can get imports on a consistent basis again? Discuss.
>>
I'm reading Eat-Man and City Hunter and trying to gather some strenght and courage to finish Steel Ball Run.

>>124547058
Are you buying directly from amazon, or from sellers? Because the sellers can increase/decrease prices whenever they feel like it.

It's all shit, and you're a fucking jew.

Could be better, could be worse. Though we're better off now than we were a few years ago. There's certainly not a lack of things to read.

>>124547605
Sellers. I was mad how for some fucking reason it charges $8 instead of 4 simply because it was 2 books and not one. If i'm buying from the same seller it shouldn't just multiply the shipping costs by the product number when they are from the same seller and the exact same size/weight. It doesn't cost $8 for 2 week shipping for 2 small ass books when we are both in the US

Such is the fate of buying from shitty third-party sellers, anon. Best bet is pre-ordering stuff from Amazon months in advance, that way you are automatically locked in for the lowest price.

Other options are keeping your fingers crossed for it to appear on one of the Barnes & Noble 50% off promotions every Monday, or buying it for a slightly cheaper than everyone else price at RightStuf (or waiting for publisher sales).

3rd party sellers usually aren't the best choice, since they'll dick you over with shipping costs or inflating prices.

How's the manga scene down there in South America? I hear the prices can get pretty ridiculous.

YKK...been a while since I've read that. So fucking comfy.
>>
>>124548107
While the production values aren't the best, it's still nice to own. Plus, now that it's confirmed that they're not dropping Vinland Saga, and that they'll be sticking with hardcovers, I'm relieved.

Speaking of, I'm stoked that Dark Horse got Planetes and will be putting that out in omnibus at the end of the year. Their CLAMP releases were fucking stellar. Lots of color pages, and really nice paper stock too.

I'm not from USA, in my country, Vinland Saga is currently being published, it's still on Volume 7.
>>
>>124548111
Paper quality is the best out there. Better than shitty jap paper and cheap american manga paper. Translation is fine. No real localization issues outside of local slangs, which makes swearing pretty, well, Argentinian.
It's also the only REAL manga publisher in the country, with the "competition" releasing around 1 volume per 2 months of Naruto, One Piece, Monster and Trigun (80% of their licences).
Prices went up by a lot since last year, but that's just the country itself.

>>124548376
No shit? Ah that is a shame about the lack of competition. Usually it gives someone to keep pace with. Prices have been on the rise here too, but not nearly as much.
>>
>>124548500
I would say Punikano, but buying that supports the devil.
Perhaps Black Lagoon, but I'm not the poster that used that 99% figure.
>>
>>124548500
Black Lagoon.
Seki-kun is good but got old with it's antics fast but that's personal preference
AgK was good if only for reading it with /a/ since the beginning and funposting
Magus looks good from some art i saw, but haven't read it
Actually buying Fakku shit makes it instantly irredeemable
>>
I'm reading Kokou No Hito, it's fucking amazing but I'm already so depressed halfway through.

I don't usually buy manga since I find my tablet extremely comfy to read on, but I'm considering getting all of HxH if I can. With the hiatus I'll just end up rereading it so may as well have a physical copy.
>>
>>124548545
>Ah that is a shame about the lack of competition.
Honestly, their pace is pretty good. It's unfortunate that bad selling titles really do suffer a lot. Seriously, KareKano will probably finish in 2027. At least they don't cancel.
The only real problem with Argentinian manga is the lack of options. Kodansha and Square Enix refuse to sell their licenses here because well, they are afraid of economic instability.
And for a country as fucked up as this one, I'm surprised we get more than 1 new titles per year.
>>
>>124548111
Pretty much this >>124548376 Altho I have to disagree on the localisation. The argie slang is really absurd at times. Old timey samurais and classy englishmen calling each other pelotudo is unintentionally hilariou to point they even put in swears where there originally wasn't any because that's just argentine speech patterns.

My mercosul brother. How is the manga market in your country?
>>124548111
In my country, they are kinda cheap... If you buy in dollar(3.6 to 7USD, the variables being the title, author, tanko volume'nd number of pages, etecetera). Most of the public are already graduated college workers or uni students, so unlike in my time, childs and teens can't afford to develop a hobby this expensive.

>>124548684
Well shit, that blows but at least you're kind of getting KareKano still?

>Kodansha and Square Enix
Alright, that blows. The US seldom gets many seinen series these days since they sell like shit, so that crosses off a lot of good Kodansha titles. Thankfully we're at least getting some good stuff like Ajin and Witchcraft Works.

>>124548686
Yeah, localization can be rough. Sometimes you'll get good translations, where other times you can get horrific abominations where they scrapped the entire script. But that's why I both buy locally and import.

Just finished reading ZERO by Matsumoto Taiyou 5 minutes ago, after putting it on hold for a long time, reading a couple of chapters and pausing for a while and what not, just breezed through the entire second half and it really surprised me because the first half was really slow and rather boring but the second half was really intense, totally blew me away for some reason, good stuff.

Yeah that page is nice, but I didn't save many pages from it if that gives you an idea. There are two things that can put you off from this manga, you either don't like the art, like a reason 80% of manga readers dismiss any series, or you don't like anything related to sports, which is also a pretty common reason to be put off by a series. But hey if by any chance you don't mind these 2 things maybe give it a try and try to get yourself past the first half.
>>
>>124549923
I enjoy it even though I was never into rom-coms. I understand why the anime series is to be hated, but the manga isn't bad.

Matsumoto Taiyou's debut was the baseball manga Straight (2 volumes long), and I hear it was pretty run-of-the-mill until the 2nd volume, in which his editors let him do whatever he liked with the story. In any case, it was a showdown between a monster batter and a pitcher who only throws straight ball, and its refinement was what developed into the Travis vs. Goshima story of Zero.

This is probably why Straight has since never got a reprint edition, as Matsumoto sees Zero as the more polished version of the kind of sports story he wanted to tell with it.

I quite like it because it's purely about competition whereas so many of Matsumoto's other stories have friendship as a prominent theme.
>>
>>124550437
>dismiss any sports manga
Oh yeah, definitely. At the same time, they'd probably dismiss a hell of a lot of other things as well.

That cliffhanger is brutal. I remember gnashing my teeth in anticipation over it. Volume 5 was sufficiently cute thankfully.

Have any English buyers purchased any books from One Peace Books before? I honestly hadn't heard of them until it was announced that they picked up the Shieldbro license.

Reading: 36 series
Buying: I've really cut down on buying in the few years. I also sold several hundred volumes because I didn't care for them anymore and I bought them mostly in the first few years after I started buying in 2002.
It saddens me in a way, but I can't justify the expense for a lot of them anymore.

So, I'm only buying on 16 series right now.
Though, I'm going to start a few new ones soon.

I have bought way too many light novels, probably most that have been released, at least the first volume of, if not more. They are almost always entirely shitty, yet I persist. I guess simply another example of self-hate.

I wouldn't really call it friendship, but generally more about the relationships built around an area of focus. Very rarely he seems to tackle anything sort of head-on.

They're a mixed bag. Their Sasameki Koto (Whispered Words) release was pretty bad; lots of typos and QC issues, but they did better in the second release for it.

I'm kind of anxious to see what their Shieldbro LNs are going to look like, but dammit, I'm set to support them in the endeavor. Hopefully it isn't a trainwreck of a release.

>>124550737
I feel you, man. I've had to cut back my spending at times, and really wish I had more cashflow than I currently do (who doesn't). I probably should cut back on the amount of stuff I read.

16 is a reasonable number of series to concurrently purchase. More than that and you start to lose track of shit.

I started buying manga used instead of getting them new, I don't mind ones that have library markings (as long as they're still in decent condition) and they usually cost around $4 compared to $12.

Only weird one so far was a volume of Bokurano that was hardcover instead of paperback.

>>124550913
>>124550737 here

I sold entire series en-masse on ebay for $2-3 per volume. Didn't have any problems.

Otherwise, other places to sell, I guess.
Could try donating to a library, or selling at a used book shop.

Obviously not a good idea to sell on /a/, but could try other places.

>>
>>124550831
True, or at least not anymore. After that whole Amazon dispute with distributors/publishers recently, prices for manga have been fairly high. I don't see much dip below $10 anymore, which is a damn shame.

I've been ordering a lot more from RightStuf and B&N nowadays, even though I have Amazon Prime.

>>124550834
I'm stuck in the past. I love the smell and feel of a book, and have always had a hard time reading anything longer than a few chapters on my computer. I used to do it a lot when I was younger, but it's hard to beat having the book in front of you.

>>124550913
Goodwill or any donation/charity place. Seriously, I did this when I just recently moved with a few boxes of old manga. You even get a tax write-off for the stuff you donate!

If that isn't a viable option, there's always donating to your local libraries, comic shops, or used bookstores. They're usually more than happy to take them off your hands.

If all else fails, sell it on ebay or craigslist for cheap.

It's really not that many. Relases for a lot are far and few between. Some people claim to be reading 100's. Sometimes I won't read scanlations for a month or two and there isn't much new. Monthlies do that. US releases take even longer. So, yeah, I used to read a lot more ,but for various reasons, I'm not.

My guess it's the high concentration of japaneses or niseis and sanseis that we have here. Most of them get high positions in these publishing houses... since they tend to keep themselves together in a quite conservative way and preserve the love for Nihon, they bring many types of obscure stuff. At least, it's the main theory of how stuff like Rayearth, Sakura Taizen and Shurato came to this wasteland.

A light novel shelf. Sold a lot of them.
Opinions on light novels I've purchased, all the time of publication:
.Hack Another Birth: I was playing the games. Terrible.
.Hack Cell: See above.
.Hack//AI Buster: Not good, but not terrible.
Book Girl: Didn't care at all.
Death Note: Tolerable
Devil May Cry: Terrible
Fafner: Mediocre
Fullmetal Alchemist: Decent, nothing special.
Genshiken: Disappointing
Guin Saga: Okay
Haruhi: The more Haruhi media I consumed, the less I liked it. Stopped reading after the 4th volume. Watched the anime and bought some of the manga then sold it. Probably won't continue reading.
Kino no Tabi: Overrated, but decent.
Moribito: Okay
Rurouni Kenshin: Awful
Spice and Wolf: I enjoy it.
Trinity Blood: Rage against Mars: Not worthwhile
Trinity Blood: Reborn on Mars: Not worthwhile
Welcome to the NHK: Novel~Anime>Manga. Good.
Blade of the Immortal: Why was this shit allowed? Just as bad as the anime, if not more so.
Attack on Titan: Before the Fall: Worse than expected, which wasn't much.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?: Enjoyable

Read some as fan translated:
Sword Art Online: Terrible translation and worse as it goes along.

Pre-ordered:
The Isolator, Vol. 1
Durarara!!, Vol. 1 (novel) (Durarara!! (novel))
The Irregular at Magic High School, Vol. 1

Bought a few more Spice and Wolf LN volumes, up to volume 11 there. Got all of A Bride's Story that's currently out and added Anything And Something because I need my Mori fix. Also bought Solanin even though I already read it online. I just loved it to death so much I needed a physical copy. Also got the All You Need is Kill manga at the recommendation of a friend, it was okay. Outside of that I have all of 20th/21st Century Boys, 11 omnibus volumes of Vagabond, and all of Black Lagoon. And randomly, I have volume 1 of Akira which I haven't read. Berserk and Vinland Saga are high priorities to collect next and I recently found out Prison School is getting released here so that could be neat.

Dog vol 1 (bought this one on an impulse, haven't read it yet, don't know if it was a tupid buy)

RIP. I like their Negima.
>>
>>124554902
I unfortunately have 12 Beast volume 1.

I'm trying to think of a creative way to utterly destroy it.
>>
>>124554902
What did they do with 12Beast? I haven't bought it yet but it was probably going to be in my next purchase
>>
>>124554960
I doubt it was very good.
Del Rey's version was a lot better, I'm sure.
>>
>>124555048
Butchered it.

They used "pwned" and Leeroy Jenkins in the same paragraph.
>>
>>124549029
I have that shelf. 2nd board from the top is bending too.
>>
>>124546777
>What are you buying?

I just ordered 124 manga tankoubon to fill in holes in my collection.
Stuff I've read years ago but haven't ever bothered to complete the shelf.

Like rest of: Yotsubato, Mugen no Juunin, Hellsing, Blackjack ni Yoroshiku, Trigun Maximum, ARMS, Zettai Karen Children, One PIece, Tenshi na konamaiki, etc.
>>
>>124554832
They published lots of garbage, no doubt, but they had some gems. Like you mentioned, Sword of the Dark Ones wasn't bad. Also adored Dorothea, which was a halfway decent fantasy series from Cuvie.

>>124554902
Good choices, man. Are you talking about DOGS: Bullets & Carnage? Or that other series from Kodansha?

>>

I don't buy translated crap, so yes.
Need to make another batch of hundred or so to fill random holes in rest of my collection this year before moving on.

Sitting at approximately 1020~1050 books before the batch.
>>
>>124555479
Yes, now go back to your cancer general.
>>
>>124555338
Oh man, I completely forgot about Renta. They're still around, huh? I'm personally still trying to get the last few volumes of Dorothea, but haven't had much luck.

>>124555479
Nah, that's fine. Looking forward to picking this one up too. I didn't care for his previous SJ series, but I'm really interested in this especially with all the attention its gotten from lots of big name mangaka.

Shoukoku no Altair needs more love. The art is gorgeous and the whole plot is filled of politics and "Aha!" moments.

>>
>>124556113
My problem with Seven Seas is that they change the script. They say it's to "appeal" to the Western readers but that's bullshit.

The puns don't help their case either.
>>
>>124556248
Did they actually respond? Haven't seen anything since the thread from last night.
>>
>>124556359
the PR dude said he would bring it up to the proper department

I asked him what the rational was behind putting in so many puns and refferences that weren't in the original Japanese text, and he never responded. lel
>>
>>124556221
>yeah bullets and carnage
Ah, good choice then. It's not the best thing you'll ever read, but damn is it entertaining. Plus, Miwa Shirow's artwork is very pretty to look at. Plot can be all over the place, but again, it's entertaining. Kind of like a Hollywood blockbuster in a sense.

Though we're stuck with the waiting game, since VIZ more or less caught up with the JP releases a while back, so we usually get one vol/year now.

I remember looking in various Tokyopop volumes for who the translator was. A lot of them didn't have a name, but rather a business. Those online business that say they will translate stuff for you for cheap.
>>
>>124557089
>Those online business that say they will translate stuff for you for cheap.
That sure explains a lot about TP's tl quality.
>>
>>124557089
A year ago in GTO thread dude who worked for them said that they were taking literally anyone who know Japanese to some degree. Which are students without any proper knowledge.
>>
>localized shit
Fuck off. If you want to support the industry buy the raws and read the translation somewhere or learn japanese.
>>
>>124557089
Yeah, sometimes they wouldn't even translate even. A few times they hired English writers for basically rewrites. That's why Battle Royale had so many plot inconsistencies in the US version. Two come to mind are Keith Giffen and Richard Knaak.
>>
>>124557224
Learning japanese is too much of a bother. What if you just want to collect them for it's own sake? I'd rather have something I can read.

Translation was only one of their many problems.
>>
>>124557328
Burn them on the cold winter night.
>>
>>124557089
TP was notorious for that kind of stuff, especially towards the end. No matter what people say about translations nowadays, they really took the cake.

>>124557224
I import what I can, but it can be pretty expensive, or at least no cheaper than buying localized stuff in the meantime. While I am learning Japanese, I realize it'll be at least 5 years of study before I'm able to read anything with a degree of confidence in comprehension.
>>
>>124557328
Donate them to a Goodwill for a tax write-off (seriously). If not that, donate to your local library, comic shop, used bookstore or a thrift store.

If all else fails, craigslist and ebay them for cheap.
