I get where the adapt everything mindset comes from, but it's a pretty silly standard for non mass market type stuff. I get that in real translating you're supposed to TL with the assumption that the reader has no previous experience with the original language, but that isn't really the case for us. I agree that it's silly, a silly standard where the line is vague like "why stop at honorifics, hestia talks like a boy, and folks ought to know what boku means" and you end up with adapted Englished-up Japanese sentences.
Which begs the statement, if you want the shit that translating cuts out, and they cut a hell'uva lot more than honorifics you should fucking learn moon. But, at the same time, honorifics are easy, and it does make the tled text more accurately resemble the original in a way that can't be translated.
In the end I agree with you, if you've got more understanding of the language than the TLer is TLing, you'll pick it up in the fucking audio, but at the same time, the addition of honorifics isn't that big of a fucking deal.
