Nothing honestly except for the Professor taking more screentime than she was worth. I was pretty sick of her 3/4 of the way through the show.
Otherwise it's failure is due to Japan having pretty awful taste in almost any medium. Nichijou doesn't pander to otaku swine by having the obligatory swimsuit or beach episode and sexualizing its cast. Almost every anime or manga has to sell out and sexualize its cast, whether the show takes itself seriously or not.
I just love when a show presents itself as "This is a show about CHARACTERS and STORY" and they can't have enough faith in their audience to pay attention without some titties on screen every 30 minutes or so.
Japanese people seem to have short attention spans, just look at how much shit they have to plaster on the screen in normal TV programs and all the ugly fonts. If there isn't a bunch of shit on the screen Japanese people might lose interest.
