Even if you don't like it, you can hardly call it generic. Killing off most of the good characters is the most ungeneric thing you can do in this genre.
Sure not all about it was great, and I agree some of the overpowered abilities like the time freeze were dumb, but I respect the show for trying something different with the characters aside from "here are the good guys, they are the underdogs but BIG SURPRISE they beat up all the bad guys, save the world and live happily ever after".
