I watched the first episode and was repulsed by the way it was directed and cut together.
Why did they add shaky cam to some scenes? And I know KyoAni is the best in the business with digital filters but they went overboard here. Hyouka and even Tamako used filters to great effect. In this it feels like it's just thrown in there.
Why were the cuts so jarring, with one scene between two characters having at least 20 different cuts? At least Shinbo makes it a conscious style choice. This shit was just painful to process.
The character designs are also shitty. I mean, KyoAni house style has been stale ever since Hyouka, but these character designs seem to take everything decent about KyoAni house style and suck the fucking life out of it. Those cheek shines look like fucking zits. The character's hairstyles are off-putting. Even moreso than usual, sameface abounds.
Don't get me started on the story, where the first fucking scene is a girl crying loudly and declaring "I'm upset! I'm really upset!" Thanks for telling me that. I certainly couldn't understand if you hadn't told me it. KyoAni used to be masters of subtlety, at least compared to any other studio. Now they're content to tell the viewers how the characters are (obviously) feeling? The fuck?

So far Euphonium is pretty much intro, and there is not much story per se. For it to reach Hyouka level, first two episodes after later developments have to be reevaluated by viewer and fit as part of relevant story puzzle (albeit, Hyouka first ark is most detached from main story).
Character wise, we only get some insight in Kumiko, barely any others, and for only 2nd half of ep2 actually seems will be relevant storywise i.e. you`ll understand the braids character after get rest of story.

As for filters. Yamada likes to use those and I actually like them as well. It allows for both obvious leading on and also subtle change in what the viewer is supposed to see or perhaps just most likely to see. I'd usually agree with you but KyoAni does it really well.

They are great as far as I'm concerned. Not the best and I like other productions from KyoAni better in that aspect but I still like them. They fit the overall atmosphere of the show.

The first two episodes are fine. Not much has happened so far besides character introductions.
I like KyoAni's style and the direction although I'm a Yamadafag so I liked the first one more. It feels mature and complete in it's composition. Just like most of their shows.

Just watched the first episode. It's actually pretty good. I thought I was done with Kyonai shows since they've been boring as fuck for a couple of seasons like Tamako Market, Hyouka, and KnK.
This one is pretty good. And not it's not a K-ON Clone like some people might think. It feels a bit more serious in tone.
