It's honestly much more worthwhile to read the manga. The anime skips huge chunks of the story, including whole generations of new mech, as well as some really interesting battles and out-of-battle character interactions. The art style starts off a bit 'eh,' but it improves quickly.
Still, if you have an interest in the anime, go ahead and finish it. Just be aware that if you want to read the manga you really cannot just skip to the chapter corresponding to the episode you watched.

Little Witch Academia was good, but it was a one-off short, and while I'm out of the loop on it's sequel's production, I'm sincerely hoping it's going to be a short as well.
Trigger proved with KlK that they cannot handle a full 25 episode series, budget-wise. The animation quality went to shit really fucking fast.
I'm saying this as someone who thinks Nui's weird not-quite animated method of movement was fitting for the character, because it does a good job of making her unsettling and out-of-place in her scenes, in a good way. Unfortunately, the cheap-ass laze animation tricks don't start or end with her.

I can't say I agree. Most complaints and criticisms of a scheming character's actions is usually that they end up acting far too late for said action to matter, as in the urgency is -allowed- to escalate prior to action.

This was just nipping the bud before the bud even formed. Not very compelling of a story, but it still has narrative purpose.

They wanted him to perish in battle because of his immortality. They also had their own little escape pod set up during the whole asteroid battle (or maybe it was another battle? The anime has scrambled my memories of the manga) A committee of immortals, granted said immortality entirely for the sake of the ship, and they were ready to abandon it to save their own skins.
So their death does indeed have effect. Kobayashi is no longer obligated to order Nagate to sortie every battle (and you'll notice she does in fact start holding him back) and she has full control over remaining immortal council members.
She's taken the ship fully into her control, and I have a feeling that will come into play in the manga very soon.

I think that's why they were a problem. They were given their immortality to serve the ship, and all they do is sit there brooding over how best to hold onto their control and how best to keep their lives.
