I miss the sensation of wonder when downloading an entire episode of something I've never seen before instead of having to rents, buy, or borrow from someone else.

Do you have any idea how fucking expensive getting anime on VHS is unless you knew someone that had them to make copies of? Or even a decent flee market stand for proper boot legs of shows stores don't carry?

I remember this because I used to read a lot of shitty manga that was being translated at the speed of snail. Dragon Ball, Ranma and Rayearth were basically my childhood and Fruits Basket my first subbed anime.

Which reminds me, should I actually watch the Rayearth anime? I remember the manga being derpy, but it wasn't that bad since it was only like 6 volumes. Fucking bishounen who just happens to be Legato's brother. Surprised I even remember the first half villain's name.

My first anime was either DBZ or Ranma, but I think it was DBZ. I was probably 10 as it was being dubbed to America. Goku's SSJ3 transition was so hyped. I had like 10 niggas come to my house (we all lived near the middle school we attended) and we watched him get his longass thunder hair and destroy Super ultra Buu or whatever he was at that point.

Yeah, tapes were expensive, and even finding copies of a series with decent fansubs could be hard.

This is why things like my college anime club were important, back then. A group that got together just to watch stuff mattered because that was often the only way you were going to see it. You couldn't just stream it yourself or pass a thumbdrive with copies. Having people show up with tapes from the collection was a way to see stuff you couldn't see otherwise. Heck, you might not have even heard of it before.

I bought approx 300 laserdiscs over the years and even traveled to Tokyo a few times on buying expeditions. Chances are many of you from way back then had copies whose pedigree came from my discs or discs that I bought for friends and acquaintances thru their buying lists. Subs were via SuperGen genlocks via Amiga 500 and Amiga 2000HD personal computers onto a AG1960 recorder thru a TBC. Yellow amiga text was the rule of the day.

If you buy 50 or more at a time like I did, that offsets most of the cost of traveling there. So, you might as well travel to Tokyo if you're going to buy a lot. Back then, unlike now, importing discs could double the price since the sender wanted their profit too.

Buying in person was also cheaper than the posted retail price and you also could redeem all the loyalty buying club points which was substantial. I boosted the discount by getting buying lists from people I knew.

The price for animation was roughly $1.25 to $3.25 per minute in those years' unadjusted dollars. The lower price came from buying used laserdiscs and those were generally in great condition.

Ah, the good old days. I don't miss them. Between sending money orders to VKLL in Canada and waiting weeks for the tapes and encodes done in .rm that took all night to download and were mostly unwatchable I'd say it was a lot of work being a fan of anime back then. Still it was better than watching raws with a script from a local BBS in hand, so I guess it wasn't too bad.

>To what end?
If you enjoyed the INTENSITY of anime fandom, then those were the days. Obnoxious fans would be ignored and they would have tough times getting anything since almost everything required interactions with other people and copies via VHS videotape.

In my years, I've made thousands of copies since I had a nice job and the willpower to be that type of fan trying to help others enjoy the hobby. Actually, many others were like that too, but they just didn't have the money to do it a lot. I had better machines and was willing to use TBC. I also provided most of the anime for a number of 24H anime video channels at fan conventions. Those were vital in getting copies out to other fans. Many fans would go to SciFi or anime conventions back then just so they could hook their VHS machines to the hotel TV connection. If I was on the con staff for that con, my TBC output enabled recorder would be supplying the video. A TBC made the signal much better.

The only worry was one time, some rogueish convention attendees (two of them) tried to pretend they were con staff in order to get access to the hardware to steal it and the tapes being broadcast. The staffer at the room refused to be fast-talked though. Theft was always an issue due to the dollar volume at stake in gear and source material. Ben Dunn had his home burgled twice for the anime material. One can say anime material because they always took the anime items while a lot of other non-anime possessions remained unstolen. I was followed to my neighborhood by some anime fans and they fast talked their way into the secure gated neighborhood. However, it is policy for staff or guard to not to say the home address, so they could only drive around the neighborhood but too late, my car was inside the garage by then. Some "fans" are scary since they are willing to steal.

I got rid of the other 1010 laserdisc player because it stopped working. The Pioneer 3030 is still working despite its age. I am amazed its electrolytic caps have not died out yet. It is basically unrepairable now. So when it dies, the only player I know of is at a friend's home. He also has a lot of discs he hung onto.

When it dies, I will have no player for my laserdiscs. I didn't sell off my discs but thought about it back when ebay was starting up. Oh, that brings up another tale. Buying ebay stock was great back then. Made another 380K on that. There was no pressure to recoup the money spent on the discs. Some of the disc covers were autographed because I often carried various discs with me to various fan conventions. I paid attention to the GoH list as well as the attendee list and picked out covers those people worked on.

If you're wondering who I am, I am the one who had breakfast with Haruhiko Mikomoto and Mike Tatsugawa at the first AnimeCon. He autographed my disc cover and even drew more chars on the whitespace areas on the cover. Afterwards, I would joke to my friends "I showed this to some artist and he vandalized my disc cover!" My friends offered to buy a totally new one to trade for my vandalized cover. ha ha Those were the good old days.

I did and still do think that the internet is a special medium that will never be forgotten and that decades from now people will so severely regret not recording the numerous original thoughts, feelings, and works expressed here
In the same way that centuries ago ponderings are a work of art and literature today, I believe that whatever remains in the future will also be art and literature, however whatever remains will be a snapshot of our time, constrained by all the limitations of the medium and the wind of the ages as we lament and rejoice over various things that would be so easily overlooked in the not so distant future
But even then I'm sure not even 1% of the most beautiful sentiments contained here on the internet will ever be remembered and they, like the endless works of yore, will be lost to the crashing sands of time, their only witness, those who wrote them and those who felt them

It's not worth supporting laserdisc video. BOTH the total resolution and the technical video quality itself were inferior to DVD replacements most of the time. I bought quite a few DVD discs to replace the laserdiscs. In some cases, the DVD weren't all that great because they were actually sourced from laserdiscs themselves! I guess the company was unable to remaster the anime for DVD. However, getting DVD was important in order to get away from laser rot.

Most of the laserdiscs have laser rot where the aluminized vapor deposition surface has had some change occur to it. Thus, the video will have spots where that video data was destroyed.

While that is somewhat disappointing, I am not all that unhappy. I got a lot of mileage out of my discs. They've been loaned out to many people. They've generated copies as well as subs. I still have the laserdisc covers with their artwork. And because of them, I met many people. The vast majority of them good, and a few inevitable bad eggs. I still talk or meet with some of those people who have become my friends since. I even travel with some of them once in awhile. Participation in anime fandom gave me the confidence to branch out to volunteer at SciFi conventions and westercon and I even was a member of a WesterCon ConCom which was one of the best ever westercons. I've been on concoms of other major fan conventions. Those fannish days are long behind me, but I remember them fondly. So in that sense, they are still benefiting me with their warmth.

There are few instances where LDs performed better than DVD, and that's when there's enough particles moving in all directions, such as stars in space or massive debris of cherry blossoms on screen.
DVD's MPEG was just not suited to handle those well, and LDs came out better on those scenes.

Of course nowadays it's a moot point.
