They're bland and follow the same designs over and over (short, black/brown hair) and are either the typical dense or yasashii guy. It goes both ways, champ. Compared to them, female characters are much more interesting since their traits are much more varied. Sure, they are supposed to pander to loser otaku (who don't even care about 3D women so it's not an accurate comparison), but the public or intention of the author is irrelevant here since we're talking about how they're depicted.
