Another setting that was fantastic, but didn't end in a way that really allows for a direct sequel, is Taiyou no Kiba Dougram.
Sadly, few folks in the west have even heard about it because it wasn't ever licensed over here, and is too old for the tastes of most anime watchers. On the other hand, there's been a lot of Puramo for it springing up lately, and I still have to say that it's easily got one of the best stories and execution of said story I've seen in anime so far.
