Before those characters used to be mostly a pair of fat tits slapped onto a brainless ditz, but lately it seems that japan has gotten things more and more right. The best thing is that those characters still can be lewd as fuck and show as much skin as they like, meaning they can fully act out their role as women in anime.

Akame ga Kill is neither harem nor ecchi, it's just a battle shounen with some fanservice thrown in. If there's a prominently featured woman in a battle shonen, chances are she's strong, independent and intelligent. This isn't a trend as much as it's a staple.
Not that I'm complaining, I love me some women who actually ARE strong and independent instead of just saying it. If only we had more of those IRL, maybe 3DPD would be tolerable.
