That's why I love how it was just "END". Not bad end or dead end. Shirou didn't really fail. If you think about it, here's what would happen: As nothing changes with the two of them, the fight between Sakura and Tohsaka goes the same as before. But now there's no Shirou to calm Sakura down, so Sakura ends up bringing down the entire cavern, killing her, coma Shirou, Rin, and AM.
So technically they still save the world...
