Ok, the Lord of the Rings example might have been a bit of a stretch, you're right.
Personally I thought the way they expanded on the characters was exciting and realistic. It makes sense that the women he is around would fall for him, even though he may not notice. Especially true if he already has a girlfriend (don't see that in many harems) True it's not the newest angle. I do like, however, that they change up the main character quite a bit. Also, the fact that heloses a good deal of his harem in the enddoesn't link up with the traditional harem anime.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the fuck out of Bake. It was a real breath of fresh air for me, and completely absorbed me. I really didn't feel like anything was lost in the sequels, or that it got repetitive.
I do know people, one of them being my father, who thought that Star Wars should have ended with the first movie. I thought all of them were brilliant (until 1, 2 and 3) but to each his own really!
What I find most exciting about the sequels is they really start to dig into the world, the world where Oddities and Men live together. I'm still working on figuring out the metaphor behind the Oddities (they're obviously Monogataris themselves, but exactly what that means I'm not sure.)
I guess I can't help myself. I'm really looking forward to future releases and reading more translations. Consider me hooked.

Let me be upfront in that I don't think Nise is explicitly bad. In fact, I think it's a decent comedy. However, that's not what I came to love about Bake. Now has come the time for me to repeat what I've said several times over the years: whereas Bake had a good balance between the supernatural drama and faffing about, Nise fell really hard on the side of the latter. It was shallower for it.

I don't know if you include the sisters in this, but I will take this moment to mention that they are terrible characters. They are flat and should have remained little side characters that got Koyomi out of bed in the morning. Sure, they are sexual as fuck and I would wreck Karen as hard as a man could possible sex up a woman, but they aren't interesting, complex, engaging, or anything of the sort. That so much time is spent on them is to the series' detriment.

They don't get Bake-levels of low screentime, son. They actually get a fair bit. The arcs revolve around them, even if they don't even show up for their respective finales. It stains the plot and makes it hard to get engaged when you don't care about these sluts' problems (even if I do want Karen to engage herself with my dick's problems). The fake theme of fake fakery also heavily relies on these two fakes.

I mean, one second Araragi can be groping Hachikuji and the next he's seriously asking her for life advice and she is delivering beautifully.
