The trick about horror is to take away the viewer's sense of security.
The ones that do horror best modernly since people have become more knowledgeble about the supersticious, are "mockumentaries" that try to pass themselves off as real.
We need a manga or any form of mediam that is able to achieve going under someone's skin.
For example, Concrete Girl was guro I read and found disturbing but when I read it was based on a real story, a terrible uneasy feeling came out.
It's hard to achieve horror genre, it is shit because over time people might become desensitized.
I reccomend reading books about serial killers, those will send chills down your spine and make you apathetic for a bit.
I don't think anime or current movies are able to achieve true horror and confusion of "how can this be real" anymore. Maybe suspense

Junji ito isnt horror. Its just "weird shit happens, theres no explanation and it ends on a cliffhanger".
The Junji Ito stories I like most are the ones that deal with common scenarios people can relate to. Like the one where the kid keeps hearing noises and then when he opens a door, on the other side is a face right next to his hand. Its simple and short but I remember it any time I go to open a door when its dark and I'm creeped out.
