The old OVA is boring and shit, absolutely shit compared to LOGH for sure. Only thing it had going for it was the designs.
The new manga is much better, even though a bit less "mature" and grounded/realistic in the atmosphere.
For all the moaning about the changed designs since the announcement, you'd think that's the one and only thing that matters. May as well just look at an Amano artbook then, since the story or how it's told seems to be of minor import.

Like >>123691548 said, the story in the LNs follows an expy of Pre-Islamic Persia. Only the name Arslan is of Turkish origin, and even that is debatable as there are Iranians with the name even if not of Turkish/Turkic stock.
The royal capitals of Susa, Ectabana, Parsagrade, and Persepolis are shown in the map. The LNs and overall story only loosely is inspired by the Legend of Arslan, the entire framework of the actual characters and setting is pre-Islamic Persia.
Even the main people of the protagonist, reside in Pars, the province in Iran where the majority of the Persian tribe settled before the Persian revolt against their kin, the Medians in the early 6th century.
My point being simply, this heavily about paralleling Persian history, not Turkish in the anime and novels, which loosely, are adapted partially from the Legend of Arslan.

Amir Arsalan-e Namdar (Persian: امیر ارسلان نامدار) is a popular Persian legend which was narrated to Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar, the Qajar Shah of Persia in the 19th century, (though the legend itself is much older) by a storyteller named Mohammad Ali Naqib al-Mamalek (Persian: میرزا محمدعلی نقیب الممالک). From a historical perspective Seljuk "Turks" were actually a mixed race of Turks and Persians.
The Legend "Amir Arsalan" also "erases" Hassan Sabbah from the tale as his branch of Shia Islam,"Isma'ilism" was a controversial topic for Shia Persians at the time. Nizam al-Mulk is another personality that got divided into different characters. (His erasure was because of Siyasatnama contradicted Qajar Dynasty's right to rule.

Seljuks were Persianized, but that is more of a reference to the fact they settled in Persia, then actually being an ethnic mix of Caucasian/Mongoloian ethnicity. Also the claim about Ottoman-Persian aggression happened almost 400-500 years after the real Arp Arslan lived, and the Anatolian branch of Seljuk Turks would establish themselves for their descendents to become the Ottoman Turks/Rum Turks.

And if you have the chance go to/contact Ankara University's Language, History and Geography Department or Shiraz University's School of Literature and Humanity Science Department. Tale itself creates a modified "Persian Alp Arslan". I just probed the reasons behind it. And it has something to do with Turks and Ottomanic Claims of Persia. Ottomans were always trying to instigate local population in Iran to rebel against their Persian rulers and return to the their true motherland with their land. One of the casus belli of the Ottoman–Persian War (1821–23) was that Ottoman Empire was harboring rebellious tribesmen. They were basically doing what Turkey did to Syria with ISIS. So the legend creates a tale with a purely Persian Alp Arslan. Remember that this tale was told to the Shah himself and its writer(not the teller, she's just writing what he said) was his daughter.

Not exactly. You gotta remember that the identification of Shia Islam with Iran is a Safavid thing. Before them, Iran was mainly sunni. In fact, most of the "founding fathers" of sunnism (the guys that recopilated hadith) were of eastern iranian origin. That said, Ismailism (specially Nizaris) and Sufism do have some iranian elements.
One of my favorite traditions in that respect is the one were Shahrbanu, daughter of the last Sassanian emperor Yazdgerd III, married Hussein, son of Ali and third Shia Imam. Thus making the Twelve Imans descendents, not only of the Prophet Muhammad, but also from the Sassanian emperors.

Either way this is far removed from the tangent claiming that the LNs and its adaptions are based off Turkish characters and history, but rather Persian ones; solidified and made tangible by Persian locations, names, and parallels to its pre-Islamic history.

That's why I said Arabs/Sunnis hate the concept of Twelver Islam/Shia Islam. Its a heavy admixture of Persian and Iranian mythology and folklore tying Islam to Iranians. But another main difference is the support of Ali as being Mohammad's successor irregardless of him or his bloodline having ties to Persians.
