It doesn't try to push either of these more than another. Every reaction by the characters is one that's totally natural.

I don't understand why people try to extrapolate from real world technological capabilities to sci-fi anime if the sci-fi anime doesn't try to justify themselves in the context of real world technology.

I assumed its because the robots emotions are based on a algorithm and eventually that algorithm can receive to many inputs. Backing up the hard disk wouldn't solve the problem because there would still be to many inputs into the algorithm. I overwhelmed algorithm would also explain why memories are lost first as it starts to overwrite old stuff to make way for the new inputs. I would then assume it would be possible for it to overwrite actual code which would lead to the robots malfunctioning.
