What did you even like about it? The tone was all over the place and made the drama impossible to take seriously, the only death was so blatantly foreshadowed and irrelevant in the end because everyone else was saved by the power of friendship and magic forcefields, the Midway trauma came out of nowhere in the last two episodes, most characters were completely one dimensional and just kept spamming game lines, and Bucky being the super special fate defying destroyer because the invisible mute admiral wanted to fuck her is utterly ridiculous. I don't even have to start on what a clusterfuck the finale was. You don't have to have been a fan of the series to think this was shit.

And that's the problem. I don't mind if they can, but I've always just compared the Abyss to something like the Venom symbiote. It can adapt and alter itself, but not to the point of completely changing its original material. It'd be nice to get some more characterization for them, but I don't think they really want to bother right now. At least for a bit that is, but I could see them giving them some sceen/book/gametime to the Abyss one day.

I have no idea, but it's the best course for this series. There's no point trying to have a haphazard serious plot to something that doesn't have much of a direction in general. People are mainly in this because of the shipgirls, so you need to do you best to display that asset.
Also, either pick having random girls being the MC from episode to episode with perspective switching in each, or man the fuck up and create a TTK that's worth a damn and not some strange oddity that can't be shown on screen.Admiral Bison never.

Here's how somebody could have salvaged the anime:
Start the ship memory thing from Episode 1, or maybe 2, even if it's only hints. Make Akagi's early speech more serious and less sentimental. Give Fubuki a dream flashback to her own launching ceremony where she overhears people talking about how the Special-Type Destroyers represent the start of a new era in Japanese navigation so the audience can at least pretend to go along with the "Fubuki is super special" premise for the rest of the show. Introduce Kisaragi in Episode 2. Do something about the mood whiplash in 4 - Nagato and the Myoukou 4 don't actually accomplish this because they don't really join in the fun. Make Fifth Mobile slightly less dysfunctional on the battlefield. Put a little more resentment into Yamato (not because it fits her character, but because it would emphasize the bitterness involved).
I guess that's all the ideas I had, other than maybe having Kisaragi show up with the Fleet of Fog and destroy everything with the supergravity laser in the last episode.

You forgot one of the biggest holes in the anime: we're never given a reason to hate the Abyssals. Kisaragi dies, but she attacked them in the first place. We know nothing about the state of the world or what the Abyssals are doing to it; we never see how the war affects ordinary people or what anyone gains from defeating them. Every battle might as well have been a pointless slideshow against cardboard cutouts of enemies.
There's no sense of tension since it became obvious no one would die after Kisaragi, and it's unbelievable the way none of the ship girls question their situation. The anime desperately needed an admiral character, if only to have someone normal and human that could ask the audience's questions instead of blindly accepting fairy magic and an inevitable fate based on things everyone should really know not to do again.
Just wait until the August event.
They will announce a new anime done by a different studio.

In real life, the four carriers sank and the rest of the fleet retreated. In the game, those carriers got new voice lines and upgrades to prepare for it and most people steamrolled through their trauma.The anime just sort of blindly stumbles into it and succeeds through generic asspulls, like Fubuki shooting the planes down at the last moment and magically knowing the secret to defeating Midway. Kisaragi might have been the damaged Wo though, which would be unbelievably stupid. Overall the thing most people flipped shit over was the season 2 announcement.
