Despite Toriyama being a complete hack who knows almost nothing of his series, I choose to believe Goku actually genuinely loved Chi Chi. People like to stigmatize shit like "Oh he's always out training" or "He's dead and theres no father figure in Gohan/Goten/Chi Chi's life", but thats cause this isn't a romance series, its a battle shonen. That shit ain't there but in small instances, but when its there, its fucking obvious. People forget how relieved Chi Chi was when Goku lived from Android 19, or how before he left for the Cell Games he and Chi Chi shared a quiet moment together. Hell, in Battle of the Gods the first person Goku thinks of when fighting Beerus is Chi Chi, everyone else gets a crowd shot. Goku loved Chi Chi, Toriyama is just a hack.
