It would make sense for the Chinese government to also ban shows that directly competed with ones chinese companies were airing. For example, if a chinese company was airing an almost exact copy of a japanese manga/anime, then it would make sense for the chinese gov't to protect the chinese producers (after some bribes were paid).
Corruption is common practice in china, and outside of corruption, companies hiring the relatives and friends of chinese politicians is very common ways to get protection or to avoid prosecution for certain things.
