I'm a huge Lovecraft fan and think Nyaruko is a qt, but from what I understand other than references and namedrops this series doesn't have much to do with the mythos, and is based around otaku reference humour, which I'm not a fan of. Should I give it a try anyways?

Longer answer: You can catch most of what goes on in S1 if you have a high powerlevel and basic knowledge of things like Morning Musume. The signs are half the show; you will see things like the producer wanting to meet Kyoani's staff and references anywhere from Rozen Maiden to Boku no Pico. Expect it to take 40 minutes to watch an episode.SZS and Tatami Galaxy are the only shows I've ever had to pause to catch up on subs and I've seen almost 1200.
S2 is a total crapshoot.
S3 is similar to S1 but with almost none of the signs translated. You will get the time/societal jokes but miss the sign gags.

Except reading is a lot faster than speaking dialog... You can read a line of typically timed subtitles many times over before it goes off the screen. Unless you completely miss multiple lines in a row or something, you should be able to catch up. If you're missing multiple lines in a row (and the dialog isn't incredibly rapid like Tatami Galaxy), that means your attention is wandering for ten, twenty seconds at a time! If that's the case, you might want to try watching a different show that keeps your interest better!

Sometimes I have to go back and rewatch the same couple seconds a few times before I get the line, because I get too focused on something else in the frame or a certain sound, or something else. I'm saying that if your attention wanders for a second or two, you won't miss any lines of dialog in most shows, although in Tatami Galaxy you might, because the cadence of the lines is quicker. If you miss an entire line and it goes off screen before you notice, you'll never know what that line said unless you rewind a little.
To reiterate, it's not too fast for any competent English reader to read, it's just fast enough that you are more likely to miss something if you stop paying attention.

Are you not a native English speaker? Many people tend to find that "missing words" doesn't interfere with their comprehension. Most of the time when you read quickly, you don't "read" every word anyway, you just recognize fixed patterns. That's why so many people don't notice typos where a common word is duplicated or omitted (pic related, for example).
