The vast majority of the "psychology" in the series is just random jargon used in the same way that random religious symbolism is. There is very little actual thought or greater meaning behind it. The philosophy is pretty sophomoric though definitely far less embarrassing than most tryhard western attempts at philosophizing in film or television.
To be honest, I preferred the original ending of the series to the movie, though both were unsatisfactory. The film just felt like every attempt was made for shocking scenes that were not valuable in the least. If this were cinema, it'd be looked at as your typical kind of Michael Haneke trash of easy deconstruction and goofy schlock, but because it's anime, it gets labeled "sodeep".
Asuka's breakdown was probably the highpoint of the series, because of the potential it looked like it was going to open up, but the wheels start coming off immediately afterwards.
