Not just because chuuni so funny haha, but because I felt he was wisely compassionate in a very real way that most harem MCs (or MCs that are meant to come off as compassoinate) fail to.

Harems by design put the MC on a pedestal compared to the rest of the world. Part of a good character is how other characters interact with them. Unfortunately every character who is a part of the MC's harem will be madly in love with him. They will give reasons why they like him sometimes but it is all things that we are being told and not actually seeing.
There's also the issue with flaws. A lot of the time these MC's have the typical "Oh he's a lonser. He doesn't get along with people" sort of thing but half of the time these flaws don't even mean anything because they don't change how he interacts with his harem in any negative way. Nobody relevant is put off by him in any way, but if they WERE put off by him they wouldn't be his harem now would they? Which creates a sort of weird juxtaposition.

Rance is pretty fucking hilarious and easily the best MC I've seen.
I played all the Rance games for the story since the beginning, I think the traits of a good harem MC consists of having a well fleshed out and interactive harem with the kind of girls that wouldn't just throw themselves to any nice male that gives them attention. The general atmosphere the MC gives off is an important contrast to the cast, you can't be a hot blooded and alpha as fuck and not have good chemistry with the majority of the characters, this is the first pitfall i've seen. When it comes to Rance luckily this isn't a problem, you get everything and a bit more. You have your ridiculously wild and fucking crazy Alpha MC that goes on a rampage of steamrolling girls and conquering the world, but you also get this laid back guy that just wants to have a good time and have fun with all the girls equally.
A fleshed out character needs to exist outside of a MC's interaction with the girls, this is probably the most important aspect.

Fucking Jesus I feel sorry for Yuuji. I have no idea how they're going to animate the sequels, there's some shit in there that I am unsure how they're going to justify putting in, but I can't see the story working without.
I like when the protagonist is given reasons to be attractive to so many girls. It's not enough for him to just be the main character. There's no way in hell I'm going to believe some shitty otaku is popular with every girl at his school.
A lot of people hated on Touma and Ichika from Infinite Stratos, but I actually don't mind them that much. Touma gets crap for moralizing a lot, but at least he has a clear sense of philosophy and his habitual heroism and confidence feels like legitimate reasons for him to attract others. Ichika is dense of course, and his being the only man to pilot IS in the world stinks of special snowflake, but the show sets him up as a good cook, master of orgasmic massages, and an improbable combination of nonthreateningly simple and smokingly hot. It makes perfect sense a bunch of girls with aggressive personalities would hunt him.
Not to say they're necessarily good characters or anything, but I see why they're popular with women in their story and I think it makes sense, which makes it easier for me to stomach the harem setup.
Others that work are Type Moon leads, because they're fixer-uppers. Shiki is fatalistic, Shirou is traumatized, both are described as attractive in setting and have obvious self confidence in both cases, or good skills to make them desirable. Say what you want about their VNs or stories, but personally, I think they had excellent chemistry with all the girls.
