I love both series, but HxH is the better of the two. This is simply because HxH is a more complete story, and still carries the desire of Togashi to finish. Where with YYH, Togashi ended it abruptly due to the pressure WSJ infliced on him.

Togashi wanted to end YYH after the Dark tournament arc, but WSJ had just lost it's major selling stories (i don't remember which ones they were) and basically made Togashi continue the story against his wishes so WSJ would still sell.
It essentially resulted in him being worked to death week after week to accommodate WSJ, and it has resulted in his current health problems. It's also why his new contract with WSJ basically reads, "Do whatever the fuck you want".
HxH is better unless you just want non stop fights (which is fair enough).
Hunter x Hunter is objectively better.
Yu Yu Hakusho honestly is pretty mediocre if you take off your nostalgia goggles. It's incredibly repetitive and a by the numbers battle manga.
It's only saving grace are its incredible cast of characters.
Hunter x Hunter beats it in every other possible way though.

YYH was fucking awesome, other than the arc when they're fighting those guys with territories in the house and the way the king tournament arc was handled was shitty.
HxH is better though in my opinion. I like more of the characters, the power system is interesting, it feels more like an adventure, and a cool world. It'll never be finished though so I guess YYH wins there.

HxH is better since it actually world builds pretty nicely while giving everyone,even the villains a decent spotlight. YYH was a little... Unexciting with it all. The fights and Yusuke were the best part there.

I would say it's different now for multiple reasons.
Early-mid 90's attitude towards homosexuality is very different from what it is now, so there's greater easiness when addressing the subject. Not to mention, Togashi has wanted to write a gay main character for a long time, but was thwarted by WSJ when he tried.
Now however, Togashi has free reign with his contract to do whatever he wants. Also, shota sells in Japan. This is an indisputable fact.

Hunter x Hunter's plot and characters were far more intersting than Yu Yu Hakusho's, which was nothing more than a run of the mill shounen (bear in mind I'm only talking about the anime version).
The only thing bringing HxH down is Togashi's laziness, from the constant hiatuses to the laughably poor art (which signals another incoming hiatus).
