I watched it a couple weeks back and I enjoyed it.
Hachiman is more the representation of a very cynical person that acts that way due to the failures of his past relationships with people, including mainly girls he liked, who decides to be more selfless and to help people see past preconceptions when they view people since most of the character interactions deal with the shallowness of people and their inability to "read a book past its cover."
The characters are all generally well designed and interesting, despite the plot being fairly too simple and sometimes boring.
It's probably the perfect definition of a solid 7/10 show.

They set him up for character growth.
Also, the way he starts off while, being a bit annoying isn't a putoff. They handle it quite well.
I really enjoyed this show. The girls are qts, and I could relate a lot with the mc. A lot of people(especially on /a/) have went through this kind of edgy phase in their teens, and it is portrayed pretty accurately and comically.
The dialogue and monoloues are very well written and give it a certain charm. Its also one of the only well written LNs and stronly reccomend you read that after you finish the anime.

Realizing that 8man's life philosophy is self-destructive has nothing to with normalfaggotry. It is possible to appreciate a show even when realizing that the protagonist is flawed. This is NHK all over again, where anons go on and on about wishing they have Misaki in their life even though she's actually an equally flawed individual who is detrimental to Satou's recovery.
