I wouldn't say that, Shiro isn't as stupid as all the third party media tends to depict him as, but the text gives you a better idea behind the motivation behind his actions.
That being said I really like both of them, people call Kerry edgy, and I can understand where their coming from for the most part, I feel that for a character in a magical setting overall, his presence is really refreshing.
Well that and I like characters that act with prudence more often.

I appear to be in the minority of people who actually really like the ending, and I have no idea why. So many people say it was abrupt, or unfulfilling/unsatisfying, but I really can't figure out why. It felt completely satisfying to me and left nothing to be desired. It's one of my favourite anime endings ever, if not my favourite. I think it wrapped everything up that needed to be, and hit every emotional chord just right. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I played F/SN and understood the story to come better? I don't know. Does anyone have any reasonable answers?

I wonder how many people that complained about the ending was a fan of the original visual novel. The ending was a great transition from Zero to Stay Night. After all the grimdark and suffering you get from Zero and the futility of Kiritsugu's ideals, you get this pure innocent Shirou who doesn't understand much but carries on the man's dream. The scene with Saber and the light shining down upon the battlefield beautifully represented the rekindling of hope in Stay Night.

The contrast to the general tone of the lore is pretty large in FSN but it does well to slip back into where it belongs, Zero fits the lore slightly better in general at the cost of not fleshing out its characters nearly as well, however either way both are reasonably entertaining.

If this series didn't need to establish Stay Night, then it could have had a much better and satisfying ending.
But instead, we have to look to Stay Night for a conclusion to the series, which is a giant step down from the fantastic Fate/Zero.

Zero focuses on a larger number of characters. Also, FSN has three routes to focus on characters they missed or skipped over in the other routes.
It's unreasonable to ask Zero to give insight on every character. I think they did well with what they had.

Just off of the top of my head you had a stereotypical school drama and teenagers as well as a lack of actual magicians, and by extension you have a placeholder master and a servant master.
Not that those things are particularly bad, in fact I wish there was more Caster plot, but Fate/Zero makes the event fall into a more organized and expected manner first then throws a bunch of unusual shit in afterwards.

You can not agree with a character, but if you show that level of not understanding a character, then even this show was somehow too much for you. Go back to slice of life for now, or just adapt to understanding motivations that are more than one level.
He loved her more than anything, he knew he had to sacrifice her for the grail, she wanted it, it was his entire duty in coming into the Einzebern's house, if he couldn't fulfill even that much then it's not like he can be with her or save his daughter anyway. That was their responsibility from the start, that was the agreement of their contract that she's known about since she was born. Iri was born as nothing but a sacrifice to the grail, rather she wasn't human in the first place.
He had become such a family man in the years of raising Ilya and being with iri that he couldn't go through with it anymore. He could only harden his heart using other means in order to try to prepare himself to pull the ultimate act of betrayal later on, even though she didn't consider it betrayal at all and was the entire purpose of their contract together. Only reason he's in that house, is because he agreed to do that much.
He didn't love Maiya at all like that, that's just called a form of self-abuse to remind him that he's a terrible person, so he could pull the trigger later. Guy became too much of a puss in his off time as a family-man.
