That's because the show isn't about fighting in the first place. Araragi's job is to play the psychologist for the various girls who are dealing with their psychological issues (Kaii).
He also isn't supposed to get shit done or take active action, since his job is to make people realize that no one can save them if they don't first try to save themselves (hence why Araragi's solutions never work for long unless the girls themselves try to solve their problems).
