After the defeat of Germany they were going completely desperate (see kamikazes). They were wasting resources like crazy. The casualties of letting them die on their own were going to be far less than the victims from the bombings. I'm aware of shit like Iwo Jima and Peleliu. They would bury themselves with citizens on those caves regardless of having resources or not. They were already going suicidal towards the end of the war.

Not true at all. Japan was facing a major famine in the winter of 1945-46. If there hadn't been a massive allied relief effort, which was only possible because Japan surrendered before winter, millions would have died. Even a few months later would have seen many more dead. That's also assuming there was no American or Soviet invasion. Further, even after the atomic bombs, even after the soviets overrunning Manchuria, even after the Emeperor, a man believed to be of divine blood, said it was time to surrender, there was a coup attempt to keep Japan fighting.
