You might argue that they were stupid reasons(monarchical rivalry), but they were reasons nonetheless. Each side had a purpose, and each side was either desperate, unwilling to compromise their position or thought they could win.
Wars have been sopped on the grounds of stalemate, and heavy casualties. So it stupid to claim that it can not be done. You might however claim that Maria lacks the capacity to induce the conditions which would stop the war. That however is a separate argument from "war just can be stopped and there is no point in trying".
It is the none interventionist argument. Which passes itself of as "realistic", based on the natural tendencies of people to be pessimistic. As oppose to the perceived naivety of those that wish for a seemingly unachievable better position. This thought process is tied to the /pol/ type personalities, that generally dismisses well intention people as naive. Oddly enough this same thought process is very much in conflict with AnCap(predominant in /pol/) philosophy that you can achieve success if you try hard enough.
Overall it is just a stupid and dangerous thought process.
1) It is possible to stop wars, if there is a perceived stalemate, or the risk supersedes, the reward, and it has happened before.
2) You might lack the capacity, or simply just fail.
3) You will certainly fail if you don't try, and the hopeless pessimism actually prolongs the conflict itself.
Humans are imperfect but not absolutely hopeless.
