It's pretty subpar. In fact it's one of the most subpar things ever and is extremely generic shounen.
It literally jumps into tournyshit almost right from the very beginning and continues this till the very end. There are a few neat ideas here and there but that's to be expected if you're playing for over 100 episodes, at the very end it feels like a gigantic waste of time and wasted direction; especially with the whole demon world, it had these three really cool factions with their own designs/societies and shit and instead of playing some 3-way demon politics/warring etc it just jumps straight back into tourneyshit.

Dark Tournament is where it stops being good. I reread it around last year and there's a shit ton of plot holes, random nonsense, terrible arcs, and a fucking awful ending. Most people just have hard ons for the DT Arc since they saw it a long time ago on toonami and just watched it mindlessly. The one thing that is actually worthwhile through out the story is the characters but even main ones like Hiei have major character plot holes that were just skipped over, this most likely has to do with Togashi being forced to save SJ at the time and working non stop so it's not completely his fault but alot the story doesn't hold up past the DT Arc.
