/a/ntoinette-sama, have you watched your old anime?
>>122687116
Except the airing ones I have been watching nothing but old anime. Currently watching VOTOMS and it's not so bad, I also just downloaded the 3 seasons of Space Battleship Yamato are they good? Loved the remake.
>>122687175
>are they good?
If you like old space opera, yes they are.
Many people usually complain about the more nationalistic tones of the original but it's a good anime anyway, just don't take all the usual tropes about Japan being the best thing ever too seriously.

If you're talking about Oscar-sama, why not both? You'll love it so much that you are also going to watch the anime/read the manga.

S1 is better than the remake, you'll notice how diluted the remake is in comparison because they added loads of girls for fanservice and had to clog down the pace with their own backstories.

Then I might as well start now.

I didn't read the mange but maybe start with that nontheless because maybe by the time you are finished all the bD episodes are released.

Remake is the S1 general plot but takes from elements found in S2 and beyond so it's a bit of a clusterfuck.
Don't forget that there's two movies that take place between S2 and S3 with are canonically sequels and fit in between them.

The smiles did not make an impression on me.
I loved the humour in this.

But the undershirt, I could have sworn it was SSX Harlock with the blue undershirt.
Red Jacket Harlock is directly from Arcadia of my Youth/SSX, that's deathshadow captain Harlock.
I'm still waiting for Live-Evil to finish subbing Queen Millennia before I start watching that.
>>122691643
Well I haven't seen the original Yamato in well over 20 years, and I only finished 2199 about 6 months ago, so you are probably right.

>What bothers me is Red Jacket Harlock, unless it's a reference to Queen Millennia.
A reference to Leiji wanting to make Mamoru Kodai from Yamato into Harlock? Wasn't his uniform red underneath the big blue coat?
>>122692245
It actually was but I doubt it's a reference in that way. Harlock wore that uniform simply because it was a uniform, an officers coat for officers in the Earth Federation or whatever it's called back when he commanded the Deathshadow.
>>122690869
It feels like an anime adaption of a Playstation JRPG that doesn't actually exist.
It's pretty good but nothing fantastic.
>>122692245
It either comes down to Mamoru or the Harlock clone in Queen Millennia, which I always forget the name, he too has a red jacket most of the times.
I'd say Mamoru is the closest due to how is heavily implied he's Yamato's universe Harlock in the manga.
>>122692537
>I'd say Mamoru is the closest due to how is heavily implied he's Yamato's universe Harlock in the manga.
Isn't Yamato sorta out of touch from the whole leijiverse thing compared to other leiji works? It does have it's cross-overs but they're usually not a huge deal. I think that one cat is the only creature that appears in ALL leijiverse works, Mii.
>>122691157
I just don't understand how there's people who don't like HNK anime. Even the filler it's gold.
>>122693261
>Isn't Yamato sorta out of touch from the whole leijiverse thing compared to other leiji works?
Yeah, mainly because of all the troubles Matsumoto had while working on Yamato.
The Death Shadow does appear in the Yamato manga and Harlock as well, Matsumoto himself said that he wanted to make Harlock's first appearance in Yamato so I guess you can say it's another Harlock that exists outside of the classic Leijiverse.
Most of the Leijiverse still doesn't make much sense, there are countless contradictions throughout the series.
>the only creature that appears in ALL leijiverse works, Mii.

Even each series has contradictions/inconsistencies within itself. It has to be the most unreconcilable universe ever.
I don't think a character like Harlock would really flourish as well in Yamato, Space Pirate was great because it was somehow able to have two fucking utopia's and some of the most idealistic characters ever yet still ground them against reality. I can only assume that the friction you'd usually get with these elements doesn't overheat and destroy the series because the vacuum of space keeps them discrete enough.

>I don't think a character like Harlock would really flourish as well in Yamato
Well, considering his role in Yamato was supposed to be that of the mysterious figure watching over the protagonists it could have been kind of similar to the one that appears in GE999, except this one would have been a full cyborg that protected Susumu and the others out of family ties instead of higher ideals.
> I can only assume that the friction you'd usually get with these elements doesn't overheat and destroy the series because the vacuum of space keeps them discrete enough.
Yeah, the sea of stars is the best setting for Harlock, he can wander as much as he likes and be true to his ideals, he's free to go where he wants when he wants, it's the usual romantic man of the sea stereotype that comes from the romantic era but in space instead of water, and I can safely say it works like a charm.

Yeah, it's pretty shocking when you see it in the manga, the Death Shadow appears to help the Yamato getting out of a sector full of asteroids, Susumu goes on board the Death Shadow to speak with the captain but all he sees are people wearing black robes, the captain of the ship appears to be shocked when he sees Susumu but he quickly dismiss him giving him his blessing, once they get out the Death Shadow Analyzer comments on the fact that the only bioemission he caught were those of the Captain, and were far too weak for a normal human being, meaning he must have been a cyborg with a crew of robots.
It's really a strong part of the manga, if you get the chance you should read it Anon.

Pre 85. 85 and onwards is where we get modern anime.

The only major changes you could point to as a division are when the bubble collapsed 1991, when analog changed to digital around 2000, and maybe Eva popularizing the late night model. The biggest of those changes is the shift in production. BDs of analog shows from the late 90s are all gonna look awesome while those from the early 00s will always be stuck at 480p.
>>122696550
There's so little anime available from before the bubble economy and introduction of the OVA circa 84/85. If you had to, you could split the analog era around that time, but then you'd need another split later on anyway.
>>122696580
>while those from the early 00s will always be stuck at 480p.
I thought it was 720p? But yeah, that is funny. You could watch some OVA or film from 1995 in 2k or maybe 4K, but these shows will have to be upscaled from 720p.

>>122696636
No, 480p. Because they were mastered in SD. Unless they have super high budgets like GitS, they're gonna look awful when you go to upscale them, and you can only upscale them to 720p.
>>122696524
There being a definite end doesn't preclude a sunk-cost fallacy; it's about wasting further time (or resources) in order to justify the time & resources you've already put into something.

Interesting difference between the anime and manga regardingAndré assaulting Oscar: in the anime, the incident leaves a huge gap between them and Oscar leaves the Royal Guard alone.
