Basically it's an alternate history where the Cold War didn't end the way it did because the Space Race took over. An ancient alien "hypergate" was found on the Moon and changed everything. This hypergate led to instantaneous travel to Mars, where the remains of an ancient civilization were found along with evidence that humanity originally came from Mars but left it when the planet died. The only problem was that Mars is a dead world for a reason, and the colony was consuming resources just to keep itself alive and not making any headway on unlocking Aldnoah, much less gaining any ground in self-sustainability, so Earth decided to up the stakes by cutting off resource allocation until the Martians could provide some stuff in return to make the investment worth it. Rayvers got pissed off and declared Mars independent and refused to send any more Aldnoah tech to Earth for study. Sometime between then and 1995 or so, Rayvers figured out how to make Aldnoah work, and linked it somehow to his own genetic code so only he and those he'd "blessed" or "gifted" it to could activate Aldnoah tech, which was some pretty baller shit for going to war with but not a lot of good at making a planet from. After he got done convincing the Martians that they were a new race and not from Earth after all, and that Earth were being dickbags (which they were) who'd rather see them starve than recognize their true superiority, Mars declared war and invaded the Moon.
