It was part of the World Masterpiece Theater series in which tons of western literature classics were adapted into anime it was somewhat of a national institution in Japan. Rascal the Racoon for example got so popular that people started importing Racoon's for pets and upon realizing they made really bad pets the release them all into the wild like the kid does in the TV anime thus causing a huge invasive species Racoon problem in Japan. The series also included versions of Heidi, Girl of The Alps, Marco, Anne of Green Gables, Daddy Long Legs, Little Women, Tom Sawyer, Swiss Family Robinson, The Trapp Family, A Dog of Flanders, Princess Sarah. They are mostly really well made too.
