Urushihara.
Katou Shinkichi really does it for me. I especially like how he draws faces so differently depending on the range we're seeing them at. It's not just like they're lower detail, the expressions seem to take on different connotations as well. It's like he chooses the distance of the "camera" based on how he wants to draw the characters, rather than the other way around.
What i like about Araki's Style is that it fits well with all that happens in Jojo.
The pic is from Part 7, but cluse-ups of DIO's face in the end of part 3 and the art in the middle of of part 4 were incredible

Yeah, that was a pain in the ass when I was reading it as well. If you haven't read it you should check out Bokurano. It's my personal favorite of Kitoh's works.
Asano would have been my third choice. I can't say I'm familiar with Nihei or Ishida though.

Bokurano was actually my introduction to Kitoh. Since then, I've also finished that one-shot of his about planning a murder and I've read through most of what's released of NMM. His art aside, Kitoh's twisted stories always intrigue me.
Nihei does absolutely fantastic bio-monsters and his architecture is always top-notch. Blame! is a good place to start if you want to focus on his art since there's very little dialogue compared to a normal series.

Certainly, it's not a series you can speed-read and expect to understand despite appearances suggesting so.
I suppose a recent favourite of mine has been Minoru Furuya. I got into his work though a thread about Wanitokagegisu, and ended up powering through both Himizu and Ciguatera (pictured) in one night. He's not exactly great at writing endings, but his art always has this good balanced of comedic elements contrasted with a more realistic tone to give his shocking moments more impact.

Yousuke is really good, and I don't feel he gets enough attention. I feel like he has this great balance between classic manga style and this really vivid expressiveness, he has also has a lot of impact, like he carved everything out on a wood block or something.

I highly suggest giving it a try. It is not a high school manga at all, though there are some light romance-type tropes, most of that is only in the beginning, and many are heavily subverted later in the manga.
It definitely has a good helping of unsettling sci-fi elements and body horror. The Gauna are legitimately terrifying.
While it definitely attempts to appeal to a larger audience, it is still very much Nihei. I like it at least as much as most of his other works, with the possible exception of BLAME! which I still probably like a bit more.

I'm a big fan of Maruo. They can be hard to find, but I've ordered some vintage copies of GARO magazine from the late 60s and early 70s from Mandarake and they are awesome. I love a lot of that early avant-manga/gekiga style weirdness. Some varied and interesting styles to be sure.
