It's a very unfortunate case of flanderization. Every TM character gets watered down a bit after their initial game, but Kohaku just got fucked so hard she might as well not even be the same character. She went from a tragic rape victim who was a master schemer to a bubbly mad scientist who's also a magical girl.

i think partly they just didn't know what to do with her
her characterization is very much reliant on you finding out the truth about who she is, but in the 3/5 routes that doesn't happen. And in the two routes where it does, she comes out as dead in one ending and as completely different people in the other two. Maintaining a coherent image of that in sequels is... difficult. So they just sweep it all under the rug and have her be the wacky smart girl instead, because that's easier to write.

They went with the Kagetsu Tohya version of the character. You can't really present Kohaku as a tragic character in the extra content, it'd just constantly break the tone. So, because the spot light is never on her, they just use the joke personality she had.

Kohaku's portraits are the best in the original VN, bar none. Best in the sense that they leave the most impact, anyway. This hopeful smile when she thinks Shiki figured out the truth (and the heart wrenching look of disappointment afterward), the empty gaze when she reveals her nature, the bloodied sweater... It really adds to just how hard she hits you in the Far Side.

Hisui route are the best, but Kohaku are pretty far below.
The climax really a big disappointment.I wish Kohaku die pierced by Akiha, and Akiha die by forcing Shiki to stab her.
