Not counting the last half of two-cour shows? Without a doubt. It looks good, sounds good and is relatively light on tropes. What do people even think is competing with it? No seriously, what?
Death Parade? The threads are fun, but it's a train wreck.
Saenai? The source is okay, but it was turned into a graceless Shaft imitation.
Maria? Tried to be both accessible and pretentious, failed at the latter and ended up being nothing.
Rolling Girls? It's Coppelion V2: an interesting setting and novel style wasted on an unengaging plot.

Everything else is forgettable.
It could be worse than it is and it would still easily be the best show that began this season.

Madhouse did a decent job trying to make contests over comical things like air hockey with inane pain magic to be believably grim, but if you step back to think about it for even a second it's easy to find it all ridiculous. More importantly though, it made its world - setting and cast - too large and then spent too much time focusing on a small portion of it. With three episodes left and an unresolved central conflict, half the characters in the OP have barely had a few minutes of screentime and/or haven't done anything to justify their existence. We are going to be left with far too many questions to call the show cohesive.

I'd put Yuri Kuma, Death Parade, Maria, Rolling Girls, and probably DRRR over this as well. I don't hate the show or anything, but it just doesn't leave much of an impression on me. The eating scenes just feel silly with the art shift, and I kind of wish they'd stop using that SHAFT style on every single thing they do nowadays. It's a decent show, but in a month's time, I'll have completely forgotten about it.

He's credited as chief director, which is the tag he's been put on for every shaft show for years even though it's really his proteges actually taking on the directorial work.
It's really obvious when you watch most of Shaft's shows that there are other creators at work, and that Shinbo himself took the backseat sometime around 2008 or 2009. His actual style is bolder than what Shaft puts out these days, but since his name has become synonymous with the studio these days people often mistake the recent shows as his.
Koufuku is directed by Naoyuki Tatsuwa, who was director of Nisekoi and the Katte ni Kaizo OVA. He, like all of Shinbo's underlings, copy some aspects of his style like the short, moving close up cuts during dialogue, but his style is much more relaxed and traditional.

As obvious as it is that there are other influences than Shinbo, it's just as obvious that he still has his hands on the wheel. Of course there are other stylistic influences, there are always other influences even beyond the director. Whatever your assumptions are about whose creativity is making the majority of the decisions for this show in the mentor-apprentice directorial relationship, there's nothing wrong with calling it a product of Shaft and Shinbo. If a director is deferring to another director in title, it's not just homage.

I suppose that's true, he still has some high level control on the project, it's just that I like to clear up misconceptions about his current role at Shaft and bring light to the other talents that are gaining influence in the studio. I honestly wish Shinbo would have a more intimate role in production, though, since most of what the current staff don't understand what made is works great and just rehash more headtilts and architecture porn. The only other director that seems to push the envelope is Miyamoto.
