At worst, /a/ can be split over it, but in general it's either liked openly or anons being tsundere for it more than outright hating it. Those Tuesday/Sunday tsundere threads back then that came by often were mostly peaceful and just chill. But that has started to change in the past few years.

In context, it doesn't mean was hated. While the concept is old and predates the hype, tsundere itself as a "dere" was new and big when /a/ picked up. It took /a/ like a storm for some time. The archetype is polarizing thus all kinds of discussions were made. That's partly what made it popular and interesting. The meaningful discussions including contentious talks was a natural thing.
There's huge contrast to the anti-posts back then to now. At present time, the hate is way more vicious and is often just buzzwords on top of buzzwords. Especially now when there's a group of dedicated haters out to ruin tsundere for everyone. You shouldn't be surprised when fans are going to be eager to defend more instead of letting it slide.

Hina proved to be more popular, and yes, Hina's fans did get into some of waifu wars. But she wasn't hated as a tsundere. She's brat and of the most dere type tsun out there in the first place. The most hate she ever got came out of Hina vs Nagi threads, and that obviously wasn't hate for tsundere when it's just a vie for power between fans of two tsundere.
Tsundere is probably the most polarizing yet attractive. Hostility and abuse goes hand in hand for them, and that naturally doesn't sit well for some people. Most hate does come from negative reactions to those particular traits. But, take for example Louise, who at her peak made /a/ split over her between a love it/hate it thing.

Houki's hate was contained in IS threads, she's a rather low-key tsundere that /a/ didn't really bothered him. Even many tsundere fans don't like her, and her hate barely faced resistance. Kirino, on the other hand, was a character from a series that became popular to be the kind of show that hit /a/ like a storm and dominated its season. Being a subject of various topics and hype with rampant trolls mixed in with active fans and haters is why it's more wild back then than now. The series isn't current or hype anymore. Trolls moved on, and what's left is the core fanbase that consists of her fans and haters.

Rin has good reasons to act like a tsundere(expectations of acting like a magi, orphan and the sole protector/progeny of a old and powerful family among other reasons). Further, her mannerism is unique. That's what makes her a good tsundere.
