Just started watching the original Gundam after wanting to get into the franchise for quite a while but never getting around to it. I enjoy mecha so I knew it would at least be enjoyable. Some great characters with strong personalities.

It was my first old anime, besides Eva and I just couldn't accept the style. Plus I had some confusions about the plot that aren't all that bad compared to other anime or I was actually wrong about.
For example, Amuro and Char's age difference. This ace pilot is threatened by a teenager and has a rivalry with him. How is that believable? That's so cartoony. So silly. But actually, Char is only 20 or 22. Only a few years age difference. So it is less cartoony and silly than it seems. And of course there is the whole thing that Char's ace status was from just destroying ships, he did less than others. If Char was replaced with Ramba Ral, their rivalry/relationship would be not so believable. But in reality they are of the same generation as they act in Zeta and CCA and with Lalah.

Uso's definitely my favourite protagonist of them all though, I really cared for the guy. Started watching a couple of days ago. I'm impressed that while there's no denying that the animation is dated, the presentation is sharp and still very fresh. Tomino was less insane then than with G-Reco. Also despite the blocky look the original gundam is actually pretty enjoyable to see in action, it does feel like it has a personality as a military unit rather than being a giant plastic toy like pretty much all recent Gundam.
I watched the first 0079 movie and was a little put off by the fact that White Base just bounces around aimlessly from place to place without much of an objective in the story. And if they have the Gundam, which is supposed to be a super secret weapon, why doesn't the military help them at all? Do they even care?
Also, when does Char become the legendary character everyone says he is? I haven't seen much from him so far.

I've always liked that Kamille didn't stay a pilot. He was able to really move on and rejoin society in a way that Amuro never really could.

Amuro became a military instructor and lived off the Haro patents and his military pension in a mansion with servants that were "secretly" Fed agents. Amuro lived like this because Lalah's death scarred him and he was too scared to go into space because he couldn't deal with the possibility of having to confront Lalah's Newtype ghost. Even in CCA, you can see he's still kind of messed up about Lalah.

The battles are never the focus, but Gundam has a high standard for action sequences and Zeta really drops the ball, I don't know the story behind the production but it feels like some of the better animators involved in the original weren't so heavily involved in the early Zeta. Just look at ZZ that started like a week later and has significantly better quality like the last two episodes of Zeta.

by the final battle, Zeon is basically already done for, though. Those GMs not only outclass all but the ace only Zeon mobile suits, but they're depicted as being much, much more numerous. Once White Base provides the nessecary distraction to allow them to reestablish their spaceborne logistics, the war is over. Amuro could go home and there would still be basically the same end result.

It's not just that. The GMs and Balls were basically a Zerg rush. Gelgoogs were technologically superior to the Gundam at that point, and the Zeong was a fucking marvel. But because of the long battle against Zeon mobile suits, Feddie troops had become very skilled and used to battle at that point, and could handle relatively shitty weapons like the Ball with ease, while Zeon had their troops dying en masse, with most of their aces dead, and newbies fresh from the academy dropped into the cockpit, not to mention that the Gelgoog's interface was different enough from the Zaku's and the Dom's that the older Zeon aces preferred to stick with their Zaku's for ease of use.
How did Revil escape from captivity? Do they show it in Origin?

A/Z seems unintentionally good at inspiring apathy in anime fans nowadays. It's pretty much like Gundam if you took everything out of Gundam that actually made it good like compelling characters, a war scenario that makes sense and doesn't patronize viewers by simplifying the fuck out of a Earth vs Colonies conflict, music that doesn't get too repetitive and over emphasizing of vocal tracks, actually interesting battles that feature more than a couple suits at a time, more than one enemy ace that's remotely threatening to the protagonist, characters over 20 that are competent....the list goes on really.

I think the Origin made it into some kind of ploy for power by Kycilia. I'd have to reread it to be sure. The entire sequence was rather convoluted, and I was jizzing my pants at the time over Sayla kicking ass in the Texas colony. Something that should also be noted is that Degwin wanted Revil to sue for peace at that time and became furious when Revil gave his "Zeon is Tired" speech.

They need to practice making the suits look heavy. I loved the shifting armor panels, but watching bulky Zakus flying around at sanic speeds made me feel that the Zeta and other Waveriders must look like colored streaks.

One of the biggest differences between Gundam and Aldnoah is that Gundam often feels like its portraying war and conflict as something bad and ultimately undesirable, Aldnoah feels like its portraying war and conflict as a setup for cool action set pieces, blowing up cities with cool music playing in the background and showing how awesome smart and totally cool its emotionless protagonist is who is just too cool to get rattled and show it. Its the difference between a show that started off trying to promote an entirely new and heard of set of ideas and mature themes for an anime based off of the staffs experiences and time working with people like Tezuka Osamu versus a show following in its footsteps and just trying everything it can to be popular and current with otaku. Its also precisely why it'll never surpass it and achieve the same kind of mainstream cultural recognition.
