Part 2.

Here we shall continue the discussion in regards to which is the better war machine.

First thread: >>121976844

>>121986162
How about plane girls vs ship girls which is more viable.

>>121986162
Metal Gear Type weapon Carriers are useful, full on combat mechs aren't.

a company of mechs would get obliterated by an entrenched tank company
>>
>>121986337
>Metal Gear

>>
>>121986308
Shipgirls have bigger guns and AA guns.
Planes girls have machine gun.
The winner is easy to determine.
>>
>>121986308
What about carrier girls?
>>
>>121986337
Only if your commander is braindead retarded. You wouldn't send a company of mechs into a position of entrenched tanks, you'd shell the fuck out of it to force the tanks to move and then have light mechs with AP weapons rush them while they're repositioning.
>>
>muh viability

Mechs > Tanks

For everything except being boring
>>
>>121986583
>Artillery doing anything against tanks
>Not just sending aircraft
>Not just ending tanks to rush them
>>
Mechs are only better for non military purposes. While mecha have their own advantages, the big drawback is the inclusion of a human pilot.

Tanks are hardly why mechs aren't being heavily researched into beyond proof of concepts.

I sometimes wonder if we'll ever come up with something that negates the extreme effectiveness of air superiority and make war fun again.

It's all
>squad of murrikunts patrolling middle east
>kid shoots at them with popgun
>"HQ BLS WE NEED AID SUBBORT :DDD "
>A-10 comes
>BRRRRRRT
>everything in the village dead
>one of the americans spilled their coke
>"war is hell :DDD"

just kidding, A-10 is gonna get retired
>>
>>121986583
yet your defending mechs would be wiped out by the advancing tanks without even breaking their stride
>>
>>121986898
I lol'd.
>>
>>121986802
She'd have to get low and close enough to use them
>>
>>121986583

You people are retarded.

If you can shell the enemy tanks enemy can also shell your mecha.

Guess what is more likely to get damaged, an entrenched tank or a large humanoid shape?

And rush them? Modern tanks can move at 70 km/h while firing. Have fun chasing them with much slower legged machines.
>>
>>121986898
>>121986898
Anti-air? After all, for all the effectiveness of SEAD, it can't be forgotten that they have only been tested against either poorly trained soldiers or in conditions of gross resource mismatch.
>>
>>121986673

GuP proved that tanks are not boring at all.

It completely raped the sales of all new mecha franchises in years.
>>
This isn't anime or manga related.
Fuck off.
>>
I wonder what the people who are posting stuff like

>Have fun chasing them with much slower legged machines.

are using as a frame of reference for their mecha.
>>
>>121987138

Legged machines will always be slower. Especially humanoid ones.
>>
>>121986162

Honestly, mecha can be better than tanks when applied in scenarios that would be disadvantageous for tanks.

Let's say you have a small mecha. Probably better called a power suit, it is piloted through the body movement of the pilot. Think War hammer 40K style with proper helmets.

Armored and with enough fuel to provide several days of power, it would make an individual infantryman immune to the bulk of traditional infantry and anti-infantry munitions. Since the size of the individual is only 20-50% larger overall, it would allow the armored infantryman to enter buildings and hide in places tanks cannot go. The superior strength means that the infantryman can carry more munitions, or simply larger munitions. Anti-tank munitions that would normally be mounted on vehicles becomes viable.

Now, if you have a platoon of 100 or so men in power suits each with a TOW missile and machine guns to deal with infantry, you have a unit filled with soldiers who can individually take down a tank while at the same time fighting with the same mobility as infantry and with the durability and protection of an armored car.

The larger a mecha gets, the proportionally more expensive it becomes.

There is a certain point where having a mecha as large as a tank would just be more expensive and do the same thing as a tank with no clear unique advantage.

However, if the capabilities of the mecha is great enough to provide unique capabilities over a tank, then maybe it would be worth the cost.

Steep/rough/crazy Terrain could very well be the only place a mecha would be good at fighting upon. If they can cling to the walls of canyons, ceilings of caves, leap over obstacles and shoot around corners without exposing the bulk of their mass, you might have a very devastating weapon. This begs the question why you wouldn't use smaller mecha, though... or just infantry circus acrobat contortionists with camera guns.
>>
>>121987080
I guess, due to asymmetrical warfare.

I sometimes feel bad for weapon developers, they test their crap to be super efficient, and they'll always end up be used against brown farmers with AKs.

>Aliums will never invade Earth and force us into a long attrition war.
>>
Legs wouldn't even make the mech more mobile since the weight distribution would make them very likely to sink into soft ground that a tank could cross easily.
>>
>>121987218
Give it big feet. You know what they say about big feet.
>>
>>121986986
What if planegirl was actually a fairy, and is actually a squadron?

I'm just kidding, shipgirls clearly win.
>>
>>121987180
That sounds a lot like Fallout Power Armour, which is (I think) the most you could take this sort of stuff without the whole thing becoming unefficient.

Of course, giving a super devastating armor to a dumb grunt is counter-productive, so doubtfully it'd be useful en masse.
>>
>>121987269
For it to have weight distribution as good as a tank's it would need each of its feet to be as big as both of the tank's tracks together proportionate to its weight.
>>
>>121987218
Not all mecha are super heavy/tall, anon.
>>
>>121987180

You know what kills the most infantry? Mines and explosive traps. Battle suit armor won't save you from a large explosion.

And when every towelhead can get an RPG your light APC armor won't save you at all.

Powered armor would have it's uses. Like allowing a single soldier to carry HMG with ammo. But it's not going to replace normal infantry.

It's not going to change in the future either since weapons advance faster than armor.
>>
>>121987180
But then it becomes power armor, unless you want to go down the autist route and say that mecha also includes power armor, in which case I'll be the better worse autist and say that cameras are also mecha.
>>
>>121987363

Even a small 4-5m tall one would sink easily. Unless you give it paper armor.
>>
>>121987396
Imagine, like, giving power armor to a platoon of soldiers.

All armed with mini GAU-8s.

we are talking about mecha here, not power armour.

>>121987363

What is the largest bipedal animal? Yeah. They are not big for a reason.

Spider tank with 6 legs could make sense in rough terrain. But it would still be inferior to traditional tanks most of the time. Unless we get into some "in 200 years" techno fantasy.
>>
>>121987343

A power armor capable to being given to a dumb grunt would be superior to an unarmored dumb grunt.

Imagine a modular system where the limbs are adjustable to fit most soldiers and can be disconnected upon damage with a simple analog purge mechanism. Connected to the main computer via USB, no technical knowledge is required. Having the programming isolated on a disc with no antenna, you have something that cannot be hacked.

It would be proportionally more expensive than having a normal grunt do normal things, but if that grunt is immune to bullets below .50 cal, then you have an excellent breakthrough unit.

They will be the ones kicking down doors and flooding rooms. They will be the ones protecting tanks from infantry attack. They will be the ones that you drop in on a position to clear the way for a trapped unit to escape. Things like that.

It would be much better to have a well-trained soldier for that, as experience will trump almost any weapon.

This is provably the largest I could think of one getting before it starts running into trouble.
One pilot, with a remote operated 50cal on a pintile mount above the pilots entry hatch.
Primary weapons are a swiveling 30mm belt fed cannon and four anti-tank missiles.
The turret "head" and body will use lighter armor materials and are sloped at a pretty extreme angle to compensate.

What about legged tanks like in GITS? Where do they fall here? Are they more mech, or tank?

They don't quite have the mobility of mechs, but seem to have more than tanks while also packing the armor and weaponry of a tank.

The only problem is what powers them and how solid are their legs vs treads. In universe, the legs generally seem well armored.

Armor and firepower of an APC. Slower. Much bigger target. Much worse reliability. Slightly better mobility in rough terrain. 10 times the price.

Mechs. They're not wearing it. Although that's a bit cheating since the fire warrior is crushed into that tiny chest cockpit like a sardine on steroids.

Realistically though, giving them tracks would enable them to move faster or mount heavier weapons/armor. Not to mention the armanent was pathetic and the AI was atrocious.

>muh maneuverability
>dat low center of gravity

>Their face when they turn the corner and see a tank turret staring them down

There has been no money put towards mech because it's fucking retarded in real life. Imagine this 3-5 story tall, slow as fuck walking target that can see far out, but has xbox hueg blind spots around its immediate area, and worse, it would have to be abandoned if toppled. The cube/square rule of thumb would indicate that this would have a weight on par with tanks stacked on top of each other to match the height of the mech. Something that big and complicated would practically be autonomous.
>>
>>121987929
There should be an anime about a clumsy mecha with the personality of a ditzy anime girl.
I'd watch it.
>>
>>121987177
>Legged machines will always be slower. Especially humanoid ones.
There are plenty of land based mecha that move primarily with wheels.

Argevollen for example had one set of custom Mass produced models that had rockets on them to accelerate to speeds I'd put around the M18 Hellcat. Then there is in the first scene of episode one, where a mecha jumps over a wall with ease and land with no damage.

Granted, in the universe it is not on our world and the technology has not only developed differently than our own, but is being manipulated by the weapon manufacturers for profit, so there is that.

Granted in the same show, infantry can take out Trailkriegers, provided they are not part of the Argevollen or Sturm line. Likewise, tanks are superior to them when they both hit the field, just that it is quicker to deploy the mecha.
>>
>>121987907
Isn't it easy to just add treads on the legs?
